Default Can't build/maintain muscle tone through walking?

On another dog forum that I belong to someone said that you can't build and maintain muscle tone on a dog through just walking?
Is it true?

Reason I ask is because I'm putting Izzy on a new exercise plan to help her drop about 2 pounds (she is at a good weight now, but I'd prefer her to drop this weight because of flyball) and build muscle, but we have very few opportunities to go off lead right now. I've been walking her everyday around the university campus here, which is nothing but steep hills and she spends most of it in a quick trot. Will this increase muscle tone?

I would think it would depend on the dog and the walk...
A corgi has little legs and a brisk walk as you pointed out is a quick trot. So in that case I would think it would help. You might not build a lot of muscle but it should be good cardio.

Now if it was a greyhound or some large leggy dog, I don't think even a brisk walk would do much.

Ermmmm..... I don't know to be honest.

Can you go jogging? Or get a long lead and ball to throw?

Surely flyball in itself will help her drop weight and tone up?

Do you know any hydrotherapy pools nearby?

Walking up the hills, along with feeding a good food that has plenty of meat protein and low carbs, can certainly help to build and maintain muscle mass. Off leash play, even in doors playing tug-o-war and such will help as well.

Walking on leash only is not ideal, if you can do restrained recalls up hill plus run with her.
Another thing that is important to do, when walking my dog for conditioning I do many slow miles but I have him in a padded harness.........I want him to pull sometimes, this strengthens and builds muscle by resistance. Another good way is by walking them in water, get a kiddie pool, just a few inches of of water is also resistance training. Those kind of exercises take care of what we call the bottom end, speed and hill work is for the top end, heart, muscles and lungs............
And don't forget to feed those muscles with proteins and added fat even when trying to lose a couple of lbs.

Unfortunately she will not chase a ball, yet.
We have flyball once a week, so I don't think the work we do there is enough to make a real difference, though when we are actually to a point where she is completing the course I may try and set one up at my house. There are no hydotherapy places, but I am going to see if I con find some nearby swimming holes that I can take her to, not sure if she will actually swim, though I would love it because of the level of impact.

She will not play tug, but she does wrestle and play some chase indoors with Frodo.

Would that be where someone holds her at the bottom of the hill and I call her to the top so that she really runs hard up the hill? The only problem with that would be that the hills are actually roads. Maybe I can find some on upper campus, I would have to just call her from a stay though because nobody would help me.

Izzy wears her flyball harness on walks and she does pull occasionally. She also pulls really hard into the harness during flyball practice when she is on the lane getting ready to jump.

Cardio is what the main 'part' of exercising that builds endurance.

Teaching her to pull on command would be a good way to build muscle (in a comfy harness)

Can you run with her too. If you could get her to pull running up a hill that would really work!

A good way to develop muscle tone through walking is to teach your dog to be in the lead and walk in front of you while pulling (not wildly pulling)

This can be taught fairly easily by having a friend or family member walk in front of you and the dog while calling for its attention or squeaking a toy. After a few walks, it should become second nature for the dog and will greatly improve its muscle tone. Hope that helps.
