Question If you use a diamond food (chicken soup, premium edge, totw)...

I was looking at the dog food analysis site and it mentioned ethoxyquin. In the Premium Edge part it said that the food would get more stars if the company disclosed that the fish in their foods is not preserved with ethoxyquin. In the Chicken Soup part (earlier post) it says that Diamond has verified that the fish in their products is not preserved with ethoxyquin and that it was on their site. It is not on any of their sites (any more) and the posts are older so I decided to email Diamond to ask them. All they would tell me is that they (diamond) do not put any ethoxyquin in the foods but that whatever their suppliers use is "proprietary" (IOW none of my business I guess) and that was pretty much it. Has anyone gotten any different information? I am open to switching if I'm not confident about this food but there is nothing I can get locally without special ordering it and it all seems pretty expensive compared to Diamond brands.

Ethoxyquin is one of those things that is almost impossible to avoid, because the companies doing the catching are the ones that usually add the ethoxyquin. Diamond, Natura, Champion, etc. may not add it themselves, but it's more than likely present in the fish they use in their formulas. Heck, it's probably present in the fish WE eat. If it's a third party "propriatory" formula, most likely Diamond isn't informed of that formulation either.

This topic actually came up on another board I'm on and the general consensus over that was that out of all the things that *could* end up in our dog food, ethoxyquin was pretty much the least of our worries.

I don't feed a fish based-food, so its' not something I'm worried about, though I can see where those with allergies would have more concerns.

Thank you for the reply! I wasn't sure how worried I should be about this. What we feed is not totally fish based but fish is the 3rd ingredient (chicken and chicken meal are the first two). Plus we do feed some fish based biscuits sometimes from Natural Balance. I will not worry so much then.
