Doberman or Rottweiler?.They're not all that big and don't do a bad job at guarding... and if raised properly, which I'm sure you and your wife would definitely do, they can become very well-behaved and calm dogs.

She needs a lovable Golden ! Nothing's better for a big, lovable, low maintenance , sweet, kind, dog.!!! I'd go rescue and male.

thats what I think too. still considering others but keep coming back to the golden. have checked a few rescues, and contacted the club for a list of nearby breeders.
why male? doesnt matter to me (with some breeds it does, so they wont fight later).

I just find males more in tuned to the situation and not as b*tchy.....I've loved all my many goldens over my years, but when I look back, my males were my heart dogs. They were there for me and my family....the girls did their jobs, but I feel only because the boys told them to . We loved them all and they loved us....regardless of sex. Don't get me wrong, I love and appreciate all breeds. But when you've had goldens in your life for almost 60 years , you do have your druthers !

Funny, I keep hearing that kind of stuff about females too.

But yes, goldens are really great dogs

Well, I own three female dogs and have never owned a male dog, but I have to say I prefer females. I feel they have more personality, basing my opinion on the male dogs I've met.
