training website?

Ok I definitely need to train Maggie. I don't know how, and she was so well behaved when I got her that I thought it could wait until I had more money. Well I still can't afford a professional trainer but I want to start working with her.

I've done some very basic stuff... she's excellent at "sit", and she automatically sits before we cross the road. But her leash training she had when I got her has gone slack. She constantly pulls on the leash.. when she starts pulling, I stop walking, and she comes to me, then when I start walking again, she starts pulling again.

She used to come every time I called her, but she doesn't anymore for some reason... I always made sure I praised her lavishly whenever she came so I don't know what happened. I used to take her outside to let her run around off-leash, until today she would NOT come when she was called, she would come when she wanted to. That was the first time she ever did that.

She doesn't even BEGIN to obey ANYTHING Justin says, and apparently when I'm not home, she hides from him until he hooks a leash on her and makes her sit with him, but even then she stays as far away as she can. When I AM home, she's fine, and acts like a perfect angel to him, nuzzling up and everything. As long as I'm home.

So I guess I need a book or a really good website to teach me how to teach her. My ignorance so far is starting to turn Maggie into a brat.. I can't get mad at her because I know it's my fault but it has to stop. If you guys have any recommendations, I would love to hear them. Thanks guys.

My first suggestion to you would be to do some searches. I'd start by going through Dr2Little's posts, and look up posts by a trainer who was with us who went by CreatureTeacher.

There are a lot of members who've had wonderful results with NILIF and I'm sure they can recommend the books they used as well.

Yes anything by Dr2little or Doberluv as well. I like the book "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson, AWESOME book! I'm not sure if it will help with your specific problems but it might.

I too really like Jean Donaldson's book. The book that's influenced me the most from a hands on training aspect though is Natural Dog Training by Kevin Behan. I've also worked with him by phone for my human/dog reactive dog and he was incredibly helpful and insightful.

You can just google him if you're interested at all.

My favorite is "Outwitting Dogs" by Terry Ryan. And any of the Karen Pryor books are also good for basic training (find a list of them on clickertraining.com).

I loved "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell. I just ordered "The Other End of the Leash" and I'm looking forward to reading it, I've heard good things about it.
