Default Poor Maggie May two huge set backs

So I really havent made a big deal about this on here before. I have mentioned it a couple times. But im just sick and tired and need to vent.

Maggie has always had a fear of men and little girls. Don't ask me why but any little girl 2-5 years old terrifies Maggie. She literally yelps and flips out trying to run behind me for protection. I mean she goes insane with fear. About the same thing with adult men. Only she with me she won't so much yelp but avoid them at all costs and shake voilently when they come close . She has been this way since we got her from the rescue.

I do take her out and socialize her. Before the neighbors and I had a falling out I would ask their three young daughters to help me help Maggie. So I would do things like have them stand in a line and walk past them. Or have them play with a ball. I had Maggie to the point where yes she was still afraid but she could function normally around little girls in public. And in turn not leave little kids in tears and mothers terrified of her. Though she was still iffy to kids running up to her.

With men I just tried to take her everywhere with me. And since most my friends are guys it did help a bit. But like with the little girls though she would deal with them she still was afraid of them and still shook.

So yesterday I took Maggie for a walk down to the park at the end of my street. There were two little kids and a mom. They kids were a boy and a girl about 5 and 8 maybe. The older one being the little girl. But I figured Maggie had made progress and didn't seem nervous so I thought we would stay. And it was all good. Until at one point Maggie was feeling confident enough to walk alittle ways away from me. The little girl came running up to her waving a stick in the air and making a motion like she was going to hit her! So I yelled "HEY!!!" at the little girl just as Maggie flipped like she used too. Full on screaming yelping and tore off (I literally saw grass fly) for me. And then proceeded to bark. I got out of there quickly. Mind you I didn't pick her up and baby her we just walked away. Poor girl shook the entire way home though.

And yes I get it I should have taken her to a dog park. Problem is the closest one is an hour away .

Anyways as if that wasent bad enough! Today this friend of Jesse's came over. A typical idiot guy. When he came upstairs Maggie was napping by my chair. Out of nowhere thinking he was funny he stomped his feet and barked at her . So Maggie jumps about 10 feet and then springs herself into my chair and out of fear pee's on me. I had had it at that point and flipped on the guy. I doubt he will be back it was that bad.

And so then she spent anouther 20 minutes shaking like a leaf. Im so mad we had made so progress. And in the matter of two days with two stupid people we are set back.

Like I said I just needed to vent.

Yes, you did need to vent . . . Poor Maggie. You should be able to walk your dog without some kid who fell through the Darwin net running at you with a stick.

And it's a shame you didn't have a stave handy to use on dude. Or an e-collar.

I feel your pain. I have made sure to get all my dogs exposed to as much as I possibly can. Bandit still hates 99% of men and doesn't like females all that much either. He has no interest in any human besides me. Anyone going to pet him gets a dog dodging them like they have leprosy and get the stink eye. However he is amazing with children and let two of the most annoying little boys known to man kind pat him and tug on his ears.

Bandit freaked out when a man came around a corner in the dark running our way. He protectively got inbetween the man and I and got into a defensive stance. He started growling at him. I have only ever seen Bandit do that once before and that was when a group of large males came up behind me when we were walking at night through a park. Something about night and men sets him off. Maybe it's just me being on edge as well?

Kharma does what you describe Bandit doing. That's what she's supposed to do . . . . Bandit's doing what any reasonable dog would do under those kinds of circumstances

Lol Maggie knows im on edge when we walk at night. She walks her fastest at night like "Yeah lets go inside im scared too" way about her lol. We live in a bad neighborhood. But she also protectively growls when people come up to us at night until she is sure they airn't going to hurt us. Not loud one just a low careful one. Though she is highly part chicken its nice to know she will atleast growl to protect me lol.

Thats the thing I miss about Pixie the most. She knew when someone had bad intentions. I always knew that is she froze and got real rigid looking at someone it was not safe. Especially not safe if she would growl. She also had this crazy stare for people she didn't like. A first I didn't get the message when she would freeze like that. Tried to make her walk like an idiot. I miss having a big dog to protect me lol.

Oh I am not saying Bandit is a bad boy for doing it. Why do you think he was the only dog with me in those situations? I had to go out for something and didn't want to go alone. Bandit lets me know if anyone is coming. He always lays down when he senses something. He intimidates people with his intense Border Collie stalking.

I actually had a bunch of really tough looking guys come up and ask where I got such a hardcore dog and how I taught him to be so intense. They were nice guys with the kindest pit bull. They had her for the wrong reasons though. I really wished I could of taken her in. I fear for what is going to land up happening to her.

sounds like she had a horrible experience before you got her. I wonder what we would do if we went through something like that and then had to learn to not be afraid afterwards. I am post stress enough to say i don't know if i could handle it, yelling to this day shakes me to the bone. Victor was anxious around this one 9 year old girl when i first got him. I hadn't had him but a couple days when she and her family came over to see my son. I had to take Vic out of the house around the corner and sit with him. I was so afraid he was going to bolt. Poor Maggie, sorries for you.

I can't even imagine what happened to her before she came to me. All I know is she was a breeding machine at a puppymill. Sickening that she had her first litter of pups before her 1st birthday .

She really won't go near any man by her own free will. She will tolerate them or well she did before that idiot decided to scare her to death. The only guy I have ever seen her approach on her own is my sisters boyfriend. For some reason she likes him. But any other man is a different story.
