Default Public Rallies for Rambo

As much as I don't support the owners actions I'm still glad to see the public behind pitties for once instead of burning them at the stake.

Public rallies behind dog on death row

January 14, 2008 01:16 PM -
Angry members of the public are rushing to support the young Mississauga woman who owns a 10-month-old pit bull puppy scheduled to be euthanized under Ontario's new dog laws.

Gabriela Nowakowska, 20, is consulting a lawyer and getting plenty of public support for her defiant opposition to her pet's impending death.

"Free Rambo!" one petition started by a friend of Nowakowska is titled.

"Your taking her dog is like taking her child," said Claire Birchall, who has collected more than 65 signatures so far.

"Do Not Kill Rambo — He is Innocent," is the headline on a separate petition signed by more than 40 Mississauga residents.

Nowakowska's puppy, Rambo, was caught by animal control officers on Christmas Day after he got out of the backyard where she lives. The dog owner has been told she is not permitted to own the animal under amendments passed by the Ontario government to limit pit bulls, which have been linked to serious dog attacks.

Nowakowksa says she loves her dog and wants to go to court to fight the action, which City of Mississauga officials have warned her she will likely lose. But she says she has no money for a legal fight.

Animal welfare groups are helping her contact a lawyer and might set up a public fund to which sympathetic residents could donate.

"I think this is animal cruelty," Birchall says in the preamble of her petition. "You are going to kill an innocent puppy and for what? Because he is a pit bull? What if people went around killing black people just because of their skin colour?"

Nowakowska says her dog "wouldn't harm anyone."

Rambo, who actually could be as young as five-to-seven months, continues to be held at the City's animal control centre on Central Pkwy. W. at a charge of $10 per day until Nowakowska decides what she'll do.

This blogger has some good points about Bill 132...

http://jmac53.bravejournal.com/entry/26447

Quote:
These are strictly my thoughts and my interpretation of Bill 132 as it now stands.

(I have received legal advice on this, but my lawyers may have graduated at the bottom of their respective classes-One works for the Ontario Gov`t so that`s a possibility)

The only dogs banned/restricted in Ontario are the following

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier
The APBT
and
"Substantially Similar" dogs

It`s not up to Ontario residents to guess as to whether their respective dogs fall under that "SS" designation nor do they need to blindly comply out of fear.

There are no so called "illegal" mixed breed puppies in Ontario at this time because our Ontario Gov`t has not put anything in place to make that determination.

Are they being heavy handed, seizing puppies and dogs and killing them?

Apparently,yes they are.

Well based on the opinion of my lawyers, they don`t have the legal authority to seize and kill mix breed puppies and dogs born after Nov 2005(since "Pit Bull" terrier was struck down!)

So I`m going to abide by the interpretation of my lawyers.

And let me re-iterate DO NOT DO THIS without obtaining your own legal advice and unless you are prepared to deal with the heavy handed tactics of this Ontario Liberal Gov`t.

They may try to make an example of you and your dog may end up dead!!

When the Ontario Gov`t has put a mechanism in place whereby a person can bring a puppy or dog in, to get a legal designation( without fear of having it killed),then I will comply with restrictions that may be placed on that particular puppy or dog.

In my Ontario right now, there are no banned or restricted mix breed dogs
(unless the Gov`t has obtained an "SS" court order on that individual dog)
They also have a collection of articles and letters about Rambo...

THREE CHEERS FOR A MISSISSAUGA COUNCILLOR

by Lori Gray on Tue 29 Jan 2008 10:42 PM EST | Permanent Link | Cosmos

The dog she is referring to is Rambo, seized by animal control Christmas Day.

To catch up on the latest article from the Mississauga News, hit this link.

Rambo was allegedly identified as a "Texas red nose pitbull" by animal control. Hmmmm the AC are getting really sophisticated with the so called breed identification, aren't they? Not only is the dog being identified as a 'pitbull' which we all know doesn't exist, but they are getting all fancy on us and labelling Rambo as a "Texas red nose". As I said in an earlier post, what about a Visula/JRT?

In a quote from Carolyn Parrish; "The more I look into this law, the more foolish (I think) it is," said Parrish, a former member of parliament who admits she supported the dog control law at one time.
"It's not based on facts, science or common sense."

I was really starting to wonder if I had gone mad. It nearly brought me to tears to read this statement. Thank goodness someone in government has some common sense! Three cheers for Carolyn. I always liked Carolyn long before she was elected a councillor in Mississauga.

Parrish goes on to say; "Given the imprecise definitions of a pitbull (which is not a specific breed) in the Act and the fact that parts of the definition have been struck down and are still under appeal". Parrish said, "she believes Rambo can be proven not to be a pitbull and is not dangerous".

I am now standing on my chair and waving my hands in the air.. is it a dream? If so, I hope I do not wake up.

Carolyn, hats off to you.. I would like to thank you for standing up and speaking your mind. I knew we could count on you. We have been shouting from the rooftops for over 4 years, but it has been like shouting at a brick wall.

John Stewart, who is a journalist at the Mississauga News, hats off to you. You have been one of the first journalists to do your research and print truthful articles. I am grateful there is a journalist who cares about the truth. Thank you!

McGuinty, Bryant, Delaney and all other provincial Fib MPP's, wake up! If Carolyn is coming out, we all know she is speaking what most others are thinking, but don't have the ball$ to say. The fear campaign is OVER. You may as well drop your weapons. The 'ticking time bombs' are on a roll!

I believe the case is still in court, hopefully regardless of the outcome of the trial, more awarness will be arisen about the ban and Rambo's life will be spared even if it means being sent out of province to another shelter.
