Default Injections

Hi there,

We pick up our Bearded Collie pup in a couple of weeks time when he will be 7 weeks old.
Am i correct in saying that he cannot have his first lot of injections until he is 8 weeks?

Also does this mean that i must not let him have a contact with other dogs/people until he has had ALL his injections?

Thanks

Kerry x

Kerry, firstly good luck with the new puppy! You are going to have a whole new outlook on life with the new puppy, they bring so much pleasure to your life.

Please, I have to insist, to you and to everyone that has a puppy or is getting a puppy, firstly check if the parents of the puppy has had all their injections. Our vet has confirmed with us that the main reason for puppy epilepsy is when the parent of the pups have not received all their injections when they were pups, one pup int he litter will pick up the defects. So please please please, speak to the breeder and ask about the history of the parents.

I got Codi and Buddy, siberian huskies, when they were just under 8 weeks, it is best to leave the pups with the parents until they are at least 8 weeks old, the last week is just for them to get their own independance. My pups had their first 2 injections 8 weeks old, along with their first deworming. 3 weeks later they got their second deworming. 3 weeks after that they got ther 3rd injection, and a month after that the got their 4th injection. They got their first rabies shot at about 3.5 months.

My best advice to you is make sure you have the papers of what the breeders have taken the pup to the vet for and from there, go to your own vet and ask him to make the judgement call. He will know exactlly when the pups injections are due.

Buddy has epilesy, that is why I stress to much that you should please please please make sure you know your pups history. We love Buddy very much, and its very hard work to have a sick pup in the house, so its important to have your pup vaccinated properly because its not something anybody can handle.

We took Codi and Buddy to puppy training before they had all their injections, so it wont be a train smash if the new pup gets in contact with other animals or people. If your pup is anything like Codi, he will give you big attitude if you dont let him / her socialise.

Good luck with the new pup, keeps us updated!

Thanks for the help.
I telephoned the breeder and she has confirmed that all the older dogs have had all their injections and are completely up to date. She said she was more than happy for me to have a look at the record cards of the mother/father and sister from a previous litter if i wanted.
When we looked at the pups she made sure we did not touch them to avoid any risk of infection so i am quite happy that she is taking all the right precautions.
He will be about 7.5 weeks when we pick him up so i hope this will be ok.Its quite a long journey for us so when we picked him up was really dictated by this.
Thank you so much for the advice so far......no doubt there will be more questions.

You would never know i have had dogs all my life.....its just a long time since a puppy crossed the threshold.
