Default Dry eye

Hello!

I'm new here. I'm searching for info on a condition called Dry Eye or Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca. What it is is basically that the eye doesn't produce enough tears so it's vulnerable to infections and other things. Eventually the doggie could go blind.

I was wondering if any of you had had experience with this. I'm a bit confused atm because my vet diagnosed that to my dog, but then I took him to another one and this one said no! But I trust the first vet more.

They both did the Schrimer test. It just goes up slower on that one eye, but it does get to normal levels eventually.

Thing is, Tobey's only syptom was a bit of a cloudy eye. The second vet saw that as "it can't be, he'd have mucus or the cornea would look really dry". But what if it's in the early stages? Tobey DID have a little scar in his eye, he bumped into something (not sure what happened to him) BUT that was 2 months ago. The second vet saw that as "it's probably a consequence of that". But why is it showing that sign 2 months after? Perhaps it didn't heal well? Dunno, 2 months seems like a long time to me.

First vet was more careful, meticulous BUT it did seem a little alarmist of him to diagnose Dry Eye now that I think about it. He wants to put Tobey into this very expensive treatment for LIFE, I wouldn't mind but I wanna be sure he really needs it!

So a) Either I go back to first vet and make himr re-check just to be sure
b) Take to a third vet and NOT tell him what others vets said. (I think vet #2 was biased 'cause I'd told him what vet #1 had diagnosed. He wanted to prove him wrong.)

What do you think?

I think the third vet is a good idea. If you're near a veterinary college that might be a good option for a third opinion too.

Let us know what you find out.

I would go for the 3rd opinion also and don't say anything about the other Vets' diagnosis's.
I knew a dog once that ran into the corner of a desk and scratched his eye so badly that he went blind in that eye. Yes, it clouded over....
Maybe the damage was more extensive than you first thought. What kind of dog is he? Some breeds are subsepible to "dry eye".
