Unhappy I need help with Max!!!!

I recently adopted a 1 1/2 male neutered beagle named Max. He is very sweet. I went on this website to ask for help when he was tearing up my house. I was told by many to get a crate. I have and it has worked. The only thing is that he will urinate in it occasionally.

My biggest problem is his bowel habits. I am so close to calling his previous owner and returning him. I love this dog with all my heart and want to do the right thing. It is like he waits to come back in from being outside from playing, running, sniffing, urinating, move his bowels in my laundry room or dining room. I don't know what to do anymore. Before I go to bed at night, both the beagles are let outside for at least 1/2 hour. Every morning when I get up, I have a surprise in my laundry room. I was told not to make a scene and to just clean it up. I once caught him in the act, and instantly said "NO!" and drag him outside. But this continues. I have washed the carpeting so much that the color has faded and is wearing out. I wish I could get him to sit on the toilet, since it is off the laundry room. What can I do???????

Yes, it is my first post. My boyfriend had gone into the chat room back in August to get advice on crates.

Wh yhave you not caught him every time, or better yet, PREVENTED it?

He should not have ANY chance to go to the bathroom. Crate him overnight, and when he's out of his crate, attach a lead to your belt and keep him on the other end.

He should NEVER have an oppurtunity to go.

there's a sticky at the top of the posts in this section about housebreaking that you should definitely read if you haven't already. lots and lots of good advice there.

when he goes out, are you going out with him? does he go out on leash? if not, i'd do that. take him out on a leash, make sure he goes. after he goes, he can be released to run and frolic. dogs can get distracted by all the fun stuff and forget to go.

if he doesn't poop when he's out and you know he needs to, take him in the house, crate him for 5 minutes, and then take him out again.

housebreaking issues can be frustrating. good luck!
