Default french bulldogs

I was considering a french bull dog as a first dog when I move out on my own. That isn't going to be for atleast 2 to 4 more years but its something I'll been thinking about all my life. My first dog. I know I'd be living in a apartment so the dog would have to be small, relatively easy to train, and loyal.

See the thread about English bulldogs for info about heat stroke, facial folds, etc.

Also, French bulldogs have strange tracheas, it's very difficult to intubate them for surgeries, so even routine procedures like spay/neutering can be a bit of an ordeal. Some airlines refuse to fly them because they're a liability due to breathing problems. They are also notorious snorers.

Those are the realistic things to consider. On the other hand, all the ones I've been around have had good temperaments, honestly they're not Einsteins but they can be sweet. Just make sure to research all the aspects of the breed, many of the 'extreme' looking breeds are cute and novel looking but they almost invariably come with a set of associated health problems. Then again, you'd be hard pressed to find a breed WITHOUT associated health problems, it all comes down to what you're willing to put the effort into managing.

Good luck with your pup search, it's great that you're researching so far ahead of time!

The temperament is what I like about this breed the most. It also happens to be my #1 most have-good temperament. Second is medium to low energy level. Third is good health.

My dogs are supposed to be snorers. BUT the snoring disappeared after a few months of being fed on Innova EVO and raw food . . . Not sure what the correlation is, but other Filas are champion snorers!

Oh I love French Bulldogs!!! I was considering getting one too until I started talking to some reputable breeders in my area and found out I'd have to pay $2500.00 to $3500.00 One of the breeders explained why such a high price and I understand but whoa.....way out of my league. So I ended up getting a Boston Terrier. They have some similar traits of a French Bulldog but usually cost less. I think they are a little more high strung than a Frenchie but are very personable and fun loving.

Good luck to you!! Hope to see pics of your pup soon.

The cost initial cost doesn't bother me as I can just keep saving untill I have enough. Good breeders don't just breed anytime so you usually have to be put on a waiting list anyhow after you get approved. So I'll probably have time. I'd rather wait longer to get the right dog for me and pay more then wait less and get a dog that doesn't fit my life style as well and pay less for it. And considering this is still 2 to 4 years away there's plenty of time to save.

You're definitely right about the characteristics of a good breeder with a controlled breeding program, as opposed to one that constantly churns out litters. Whether you decide on a frenchie or another breed, it sounds like you're going about this in the right way, good luck in your pup search! It's hard to wait, I waited three years to adopt my GSD, but it's worth it in the end!

Just wondering why do french bull dogs just have sooo much problem. Oh man, if my dog only has 1 of the above like you guys mentioned I would die. I remember Toki having bordetalla and it kinda sounded like tranchea I worried for 30 days and it looks really sad. They look like their suffering.
