I had a Sony Vaio laptop... I bought it in July 2005. I had a 1 year warranty on it. Anyway, the "e" key just fell off one day... I sent it in to be serviced, and they had to replace the whole keyboard. Then the screen light burned out, and it had to be serviced again. Rylie chewed up the charger, and I plugged it back in and it fried the motherboard. It would've been $500+ to get it fixed, so we ended up getting an HP desktop which has been reliable so far (knock on wood!). I have the Sony Vaio sitting on my book shelf as a book end right now...

HP user here...never had issues with ours. PRINTERS? yeah...issues. But puters nope. Of course we run a good anti virus thing and don't pick up gobs of stuff from the net as far as downloading etc.

You protect yourself against viruses, worms etc. Anybody who doesn't do that gets what they deserve and it's never the mfg's fault. But antivirus software is not going to protect you against hardware failure.
