OK, instead of a desktop, we're buying a laptop.
I saw a Sony 17" screen laptop that looked really good at Best Buy. Someone suggested a HP but I kind of like the Sony. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Sony. No contest. Somebody might disagree. A friend of mine's HP just died after four months and he's having a heck of a time with them getting it to work again. I think it was the power supply this time.
Of course, all things in configuration being equal, Sonys usually cost more. |

Also for what it's worth, I always configure computers online directly at mfg site. You can often find some impressive coupons online. I always find a lot of DELL coupons. Just make sure you aren't buying from any old site.

I have a Toshiba laptop. Been good and reliable and is extremely light.
Also their service is great. I was throwing a throwing star in my room and, of all the things it could hit, it hits my laptop (Murphy's Law) and destroyed the screen. They replaced it free of charge because it was under warranty, even though the throwing star voided the warranty technically.

Toshiba here too. I've really been pleased with it as well.
We have an HP desktop and it's so so. I like my HP printer/scanner, though. ![]() Never had a Sony. Just know Gateways are the WORST computers ever. At least according to my experience. My friend's also had a lot of trouble with her Dell.

Refurb Dells. Same quality, same warranty, lower price. I buy ALL my personal machines from this site. Make sure you look only at the latitude line. They are the business class machines and thus do not come with all that insane software garbage the retail line of junk does. Also, I would personally stay away from any PC sold in a retail store. The software package that comes with those things is insane and causes more problems than they solve. Good Luck!

Boy do I have a Gateway story. After 14 months of putting up with a service department that is designed to not do anything but charge you for fifty dollar shipping boxes, I was so angry I wrote a scathing letter to the CEO. I didn't ask for a refund, but I was certainly In Your Face with him about why his stock was in the crapper. Next thing you know I got a call from his office and they offered me a refund or a free trade. I don't need to tell you I took the money and got the H away from that company as fast as I could. The WORST.
I agree Toshibas are good laptops. Laurelin, HP printers are great! The problems came when they got into computers. |

Or, as "HbH" sez... A Macbook. Mac's are really nice machines, but you need to be more wealthy (and some would say SMUG, LOL) to own one. They are not cheap.
