My dog came with this shampoo and I thought it was probably some cheap stuff, but haven't gotten around to getting some good stuff yet. I decided to look it up online and to my untrained eye it doesn't look cheap or bad to me, but I have to admit I know nothing about what it SHOULD be. Could some of the more knowledgeable posters here take a look at the ingredients of this and see what you think? It's called "PureJoy"...extra gentle for puppies.

I think it looks fine. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about shampoo. The only ones I stay away from are shampoos with chemicals for fleas etc.
A lot of people on this board, including myself, love the Earthbath line: http://www.earthbath.com/shampoo_pints.html Mango Tango works really well and can be purchased at Petco. |

I have the earthbath but it doesn't work on my dogs! I even have the mango tango and follow all the directions and they don't smell fresh and clean once they are all blowdried and I use enough soap on them too!

I have to use Chlorhexiderm 4% on Ella. It's due to her skin allergies and she suffered a fungal infection last year
But, let me tell you! This stuff is FANTASTIC! I don't have to dry Ella because she has a short coat, but she smells FABULOUS for at least a week and holds a nice, shiny, soft coat for at least a week after a bath. |

Ingredients:
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Lauryl Glucoside, Cocamide MEA, Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, Trimethylsiloxyamodimethicone, C11-15 Pareth-9, C12-16 Pareth-90, Trideceth-12, It's actually pretty standard. It's not any better than the $.99 Suave shampoo that a lot of people use for themselves. In other words, Sodium Laureth (or Lauryl) Sulfate is the detergent that makes the bubbles. The rest of the ingredients are either more detergents, stabilizing chemicals, or compounds that give the shampoo its consistency. The essential oils and things are such a minuscule fraction that they won't make any difference. EarthBath, Buddy Wash (Cloud Star) and Esprit are nice shampoos. They are both detergent-free and less harsh on the dog's coat. Unfortunately, since they aren't as harsh and don't strip the coat of natural oils, the smell won't be as strong as chemical based shampoos. (I only use organic soap/shampoo for myself so I'm a little bit paranoid about these things. If you're more comfortable with the standard detergents, then by all means, go for it) |

And if you want your pup to smell nice, you can always use this:
http://www.earthbath.com/between.html I've also heard of people who use baby powder and water in a spray bottle... I tried that on my sister's stinky shelties and it totally didn't work though!

I've switched to Buddy Wash (the Lavender & Mint kind) and I LOVE it - the dogs smell like they've been frolicking in a lavender garden, and the smell stays for a long time.
Another one of my favorite shampoos is actually dirt cheap - it's called Veterinary Formula, and it was used by Petco Groomng a loooong time ago. I used it every day at work, and quickly grew to love it. The Ultra Fluff smells fantastic and is very long-lasting, the Tea Tree smells like tea tree oil but is also very nice, the Blue Aloe is HEAVENLY, the Oatmeal Protein conditioner is light and silky... and the waterless bath foam is a staple in my household. In fact, Synergy Labs makes a lot of really nice products. http://www.synergylabs.com/shampoos.htm

Jennifer, it's purple because most, if not all whitening shampoos add a tinge of blue or purple dye to the coat - it's just enough for the dog to look whiter, since blue is a "cooler" color than say, pink or orange.
Most (again, if not all) whitening shampoos are harsher than regular shampoos, so you might want to buy some conditioner or finishing spray to use after Fancy's bath. The Oatmeal Protein conditioner works well. BE SURE to dilute both the shampoo and the conditioner. The Snow White can be diluted down so it's the consistency of water. The conditioner I dilute 4:1 or 5:1, so it's almost like the consistency of cheap dish detergent - watery but still slimey.

I've been using the Buddy Wash Lavender and Mint for the longest time- I love it! The Earth Bath never really made T-Bone smell good for long... but the Buddy Wash smells SO nice- especially when I actually use Shampoo and conditioner.
