I also HATE it when people breed giant sized varieties of a breed just for the novelty, like with the Warlock Doberman and also the King Shepherd (although that involved some outcrossing with other breeds, I think). Any time a breeding program focuses on one specific aspect such as size, color, etc, all of the other things can go down the drain very fast. All genes are linked to other genes, both related and unrelated, and promoting one gene can make other unexpected consequences (such as various health/temperament problems) crop up. The book Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin gives really good information on the dangers of 'single trait selection'.

For me at least, I don't want a novelty, I want a healthy, solid companion above all else.

Some more info I found on the net:

The "Warlock" Dobermans are also known as "Kings" or "Goliaths" and are not really a true Doberman breed.

Their existence stems from a surge in demand for "big bad Dobes" back in the 1970's. It is widely believed that Dobes were bred with Great Danes and some other large breeds to satisfy the demand.

Today the term Warlock is applied to the poorly bred and oversized dog which does not conform to the breed's standards. The original "Warlock" was a dog named "Borong the Warlock." Borong was breed in Florida in the mid 1950's by Theodosia and Henry Frampton.

Yeah, thanks Nedim. That is true that in the 70's they were the "expoited" and popular breed, ruined by byb and jerks. Their temperament suffered from bad breeding and idiots aquired them who didn't know how to handle a Doberman at the bare minimum. No wonder their reputation went all to ****. It's probably like the Pit Bull, popular and then all kinds of garbage comes out of the woodwork to exploit and make a buck.

Thank goodness, Dobermans are not on the top of the list of popularity and a lot of very reputable breeders really made a difference and improvement since the 70's.

Default Warlock dobes

It just irks me lol.. if one is going to be responsible and breed dogs.. one should keep them within in the specified standards of that breed! If I wanted something the size of a dane .. I would get a dane (which I also love). I can only figure they want something that looks "scary", but a dobe has a bad enough reputation sometimes they don't need the added stuff. BTW dobie lovers I have a new forum just for dobie lovers I would love to have more people, so far we are a very small number being very new. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pinschersplease/

I understand that the breed officials and judges in Brazil will often issue 'papers' on a Fila for the right price, regardless of the dog's actual lineage, and some of them actually encourage the dilution of the temperament to make the Fila easier to handle . . . if that's how they feel about it they should deal with a different breed!

But let us not forget that the dog itsef should not be reviled. The breeders, definetly.
The one i met was a wonderfully trained guy, albeit rather more like a goofy lab in temperament.

Angry The True Scoop on The Warlock KENNEL NAME

Once upon a time, back around 1949 there was a very nice, top winning Doberman named BORONG THE WARLOCK. The kennel name was Warlock. Borong was highly sought after as a stud-----for a very short while. Until it was found that a great many of his offspring were missing teeth!!!!! Of course this took a few years to come to the forefront, but eventually it did.

I personally knew a lady who had a ***** out of Borong, and Ch. Val Eric's Slip Stitch (Borong's female top competitor). That magnificent puppy ended up missing 8 teeth!!!!!!! 4 missing teeth is a disqualification!

Unfortunately the ignorant cling ferociously to their ignorance. There was a moron here where I live who informed me that even tho I had had 25 years experience with the Dobe breed I did not know what I was talking about when I said there was no such thing as a "Warlock" Dobe, and that even bloodline wise, the last Warlock dog (Rojo) had been dead for about 20 years, rofl.

These people do not even know that there is a breed standard. Nor do they want to know. And they know nothing about the health issue with the breed. If they DID know, they would not touch breeding Dobermans with a 20 foot pole!!!!!!

So sad for the various breeds that ignorant money grubbers get involved, and start duping the ignorant public.
