The Puppy Search Story.. oh and suggestions anyone??
Hey Guys, just thought I'd update you on the doggie search, not that many of you know i was looking for a dog... or who i am! :] haha!
Anyways, I'm 16 and I'm from Northern Ireland in the UK... [Anyone else from here??] So my family and I went up the Dog's Trust Shelter in Ballymena yesterday, and although we saw loads of cute little scalywags... we came out empty handed  First we were interested in a medium-sized black foxy-looking mongrel, but sadly she was already booked! Then we noticed a buch of cute puppies too...but after my Mum heard they were part staffie [Collie X Staffie to be exact] she was put off... (after my auntie's staffordshire bull terrier got in trouble with another dog, she's a little wary of them). We saw loads of other cute dogs but most of them were already booked, in particular one little Corgi mix that came in that morning and was claimed just minutes before we noticed it.. grrr... Lastly, there was 4 doberman X Springer Spaniel pups- not yet booked and uber cute! My dad even chose the one he liked the most, so offcourse I was mega dissapointed when the parents decided they'd end up too big for my mother's liking... She thinks she might be a little frightened of anything bigger than a Border Collie, but hey i guess this has to be a family decision.... So now I'm really itching for a doggie!! We're going back next Saturday but I'm pretty sure they same thing will happen if i can't persuade my parents to make the hours drive in the morning.. My Mum did say if worse came to worse we could just adopt from a breeder... and although at first i was a little against the idea, I've came around. See my problem was i felt a little guilty about choosing a planned pup when there's sooo many in shelters needing homes! But after witnessing how quickly they go, i don't feel so bad about it. Oh and my parents now seem rather set on getting a pup rather than a young dog now, they're now playing the kiddie's role hehe... Oh and now we have a solution the long hours we thought puppy would be alone... My dad can come home a lunch times for an hour, my Mum has shorter hours and my neighbour [and good friend who owns 2 dogs herself] would be more than happy to let it out of it's crate during the time we are away. :] (I posted a thread about this problem a couple of weeks ago... just incase you're thinking 'why is she telling us this..?') So if there's no luck with the shelters, my only question is... what breed?? We want a dog that's small to medium sized, gets on with cats [we have one] and other dogs [as it'll be meeting plenty] and good for a first time dog owner... Any suggestions? By the way, if you've read this far- thanks! Sorry it was sooo long... T'was probably rather boring but really i just thought I'd start a thread so maybe i'll feel like a part of this big chaz family   So hopefully I'll get a couple of replies! [hint]  PS- Sorry for lack of pics... i promise i will take some next time! :]

well I am very fond of american cocker spaniels!
 they are very social, happy, loyal, and full grown female is about 20-25lbs male 25-30 and they get along fine with cats,children!.I am sure you will find the right breed for you and your family and other chazzers will chime in here with great advice about other smaller dogs that could be great for you. and your right, there are alot of dogs that need homes and you never know if that dog your looking for just my show up at that shelter!  good luck to you and keep us posted!

I was actually reading about cockers there now! There's loads of English Cocker Spaniels advertised in newspapers but I've yet to notice any American ones... although they are uber cute!! (AND seem to match our requirements!)

Good luck with your search! Since you have no specific breed in mind, I definitely encourage you to keep working on convincing your parents to adopt a puppy from a shelter. =D
I have a Corgi mix (from a rescue), and he's an awesome dog, and wonderful with cats & dogs & people. However, many purebred Corgis aren't suited for living with a kitty... they want to herd them! ;D They can also be very stubborn, so they aren't exactly ideal for first time dog owners. If you do choose to buy from a breeder, PLEASE only support reputable breeders. Generally, newspaper ads are a baaad idea. This (click!) is a great guideline for finding a good breeder. When you decide on a breed, contact the local breed club, and ask for breeder references.

can't fight these feelings
oooh I'm starting to have those guilty feelings again...
I was just visiting an animal sanctuary's [in N.I] webpage and came across the long-term residents page... there's dog's that have been stuck in a pen for years and years... I was just there on Saturday...and there was a dog named Dexter who looked pretty old, but was so sweet- and yet he's been there for so long, why won't anyone adopt him?  Puppys are snatched up straight away but the ones who are desperate for a home don't get them, i just feel so sorry for them.. yet i continue to search for young dog/pup.. |
adopting an older (ie not a puppy) has it's benefits--hopefully they are already potty trained, of course this can depend on how long they have been at a shelter, etc. There were several there that were young adults (18 mos)--that could make great pets.
