To be honest, the only Doodle I have met is Maddie, and she's the result of a very thoughtful breeding and she is really a lovely creature and quite unique.

Maybe it's not the Doodle - maybe it's the same BYB make-a-quick-buck mentality that you find in so many AKC breeds . . . . just thinkin', ya know?

I love the versatility and variety within the PWDs. They were used by so many of the Portuguese to fill many different voids. What incredible dogs they are.

So true.

I also love how many of the dogs are still being used for what they were bred to do. So many breeders are still doing water sport with their dogs, I think it's great that they keep them working. And I can almost guarantee that if every Tom, Dick and Harry starts to get them that much of their heritage will be lost or no as prominent as it is now. Plus they all around aren't the easiest dog, especially puppies and adolescence who are known for biting everything they can get their mouths around, plus they are high energy and have to have consistent mental stimulation. I'd hate to see a whole slew of PWD's in shelters, where they would undoubtedly end up.

They are very rarely found in shelters now. As soon as a message comes across the PWD boards that one's been spotted in shelter it's usually in a rescue or at least out of the shelter waiting to go into rescue within hours.

I'm a Porty fan, too. We have a lot of them in this area, and I haven't met one that I didn't like. They are clownish, happy, capable dogs. Not flakey like some of the Doodles, and the haircoat is predictable insofar as the "hypoallergenic" (I know, no such thing) nature of it, where with the Doodles you can get such a variety.
I agree, though, that I would hate for the "breed du jour" thing to happen.
