I had a person come into the store today with a dog unlike any I'd seen before. He looked like a Golden in body structure, but was deep, dark, true red. Like an irish setter. When I asked her what he was, she told me he was an "american standard retriever". Later I found out she'd rescued him from another family, so didn't have much history on him other than being told what he was.
Is this something people are trying to breed? Red goldens, then call them something else? I was trying to figure out if he was mixed, or just a RED golden, and couldn't figure it out. Anyone heard of people using this "breed" name before? Or is it just a not widely recognized, yet completley legitimate breed I'd just never heard of before? |

I've never heard of it and I googled it and still found nothing. I think she was misinformed by the misinformed.

From what I understand the darker red is more from hunting/working lines, and the light goldens are a more recent development in the breed mainly for the showing.
I could, however, be completely wrong

PWCorgi is right. Darker goldens are known as American Golden Retrievers and are usually from hunting lines. The Lighter colors are typically English Golden Retrievers and are used for showing etc.

I've also seen a lot of deep reds come out of petstores.

Maybe they are generally less rigorous in screening? I know this is how it is with English Setters, they almost never get show line ES's in rescue, they're all working line.
