Default What were Chihuahua bred for?

I've asked a few people and no one can answer me. What were they originally bred for?

I think strictly companionship for the royals and nobles of the area.

No one's really sure. Some people say that originally they were used for religious purposes, like sacrifice, companionship and even for food by the Aztecs. But I guess we'll never really know.

They were certainly companion dogs from very early on though.

ive heard alot of things, noone is 100***37; sure.

they are decended from a very old breed though, the aztecs used the techichi as a companion, a guard dog, a ratter, a bed warmer, sacred sacrificial item and food in tough times...
its belived that chis essentially decended from these dogs.

wouldnt suprise me, chis are very good at bug hunting.

but quite honestly, companionship is a VERY good purpose! and if thats all chis were bred for, then im ok with that.

Rotf... Bug hunting ! Dennis does this ... Our grass in the back yard is really tall. about 10 inches. He does a weird bunny hop with his ears forward to pounce on the bugs. It is so funny I doubt i'm gonna mow the grass, I did not know they all do this.

I've also heard that they were used as ratters... people would put them inside of walls because they were such a small size. This was a long time ago, though

The background on chihuahuas is really sketchy, though... no one is entirely sure of where they originated from.

They were bred to be my Auntie's dog, who would bite me on the ankle whenever I would come over, LOL.

Unkown backgrund...like everyone else said. They don't even really know if they originated in Mexico even though they have a spanish based name.

Fruit Bat...by any chance, does your name have anything to do with your Chi? I just had someone say my dog looked like a fruit bat
