I love Boxers but the shorter life-span and health issues (if you don't REALLY research your breeder and their dogs) would turn me off of getting one. Does a health warranty cover a dog for life?

Is it? or does it just take more research than poping out a list of tradional guard breeds?

I'd say it is, JUST doing reasearch IS going to give you a result of traditional gaurd breeds. If you want a gaurd dog, that's an obvious list to start with. We are just giving you our opinions that go along with our experiences...just what you asked for

Yes, some do. Those are the only type of breeders I'd buy from.

Look after 30 years of rescue and years of breeding GUARDIAN dogs.
IM not going to debate you.

The following are facts
IMO I was a wrestler, bouncer amd U/c investigator for NY.
AND i CAN PROTECT myself in prime 5"9 176lbs 14 biceps and I still have a proven guardian breed for home protection.

Guns are NOT easier to get then dogs FACT!.

You need a special lic of hands guns most of which are not approved.
They are considered more dangerous to have around kids then dogs .
Why most families have dogs vs guns or BOTH.

The gun does NOT guard your home when you are NOT there.
Most woman attacks are when you come HOME to the bad guy.
What good is a gun _ Carry permits are even harder to get .

Will a Boxer protect ?sure farm collies have done that for years.
Difference is Man work fighting off a man majority of Boxers will NOT hold be able to do damage or hold long enough for you to escape.

And no guardian breeds are NOT like others in damage or rescue.
They are BIGGER thus damage is bigger .
And maybe you need to read about the attack in CA with Diane Whipple to understand the liability to having guardians breeds in apt's.
Re to rescue guardian breeds are PTS 5x more than other breeds for more reasons than i can list.
Anyone who has DONE real guardian rescue understands this.
We dont have enough Schnoodles in our shelters to meet the needs.
But we PTS guardian breeds every DAY!.

To anyone who wishes to listen.
Real guardian dogs bred and kept for protection have the ability to KILL Man.
Thus the owners requirements are much much higher than for the average breed than can guard.
This is what separates them.

Good luck on your choice

And some gaurdian breeds are wonderful with other animal.
Example: great pyranees. They aren't good for apartments but the statement "good protectors won't be reliable with other dogs and animals", is not true.
Hmm the Pyrs I know protecting sheep also want to eat strange dogs. (hence the whole protect the sheep from coyotes and wolves thing) The few pet ones I know might bark at an intruder, but are more likely to show them the way to the silverware.

Dekka good points I wont throw my breed here since it would be fruitless.
Great Pry back 100 years ago did have human protection drive.
We bred it out of them to get along with the once huge farms now turning to yards.
10 Years ago on a Great Pry list a woman had a neighbor trespass on her property the dog bit him.

All and I mean all the Great Pry people said Put the dog to sleep.
NO human protection drive down playing the defense of the breed that was natural.

Many LGdS breeds still have it like Anatolian , Kuvasz etc all of which do NOTdo well in aparts.

planet molosser, I'm am not trying to argue. I'm trying to defend my original post. If you can think of a breed that can protect me and meet the other needs, say so...

It depends on if they are bred for work or show.

why do you feel so threatened? would moving solve the problem?

Here is a true story. A family outside of Toronto had a lovely mastiff. (not sure what kind) he was a great family dog. He was gentle with the kids, didn't eat the cat etc. Until one day he killed a little girl playing with 'his' kid. Yes they were supervised, adults were right there, but it all happened so fast.... A dog with serious protection drive is a weapon. Do you want a living weapon? Why do you feel you need this? Is there something you aren't telling us?
