Default American Mastiff

Hi everyone i have two smaller dogs(mini schnauzer and bichon frise), actually their my moms. But im thinking about adding one to the family. And i just wanted more input from dog owners on the American Mastiff.

I live in florida and i dont yet know who i want to buy from but it has to be a reputable breeder.

thank you for your time

Hm, I've never heard of an AMerican Mastiff. But I found some info on them: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanmastiff.htm

It also has a link to breeders on that page.

It looks like they're basically the same dog as the Old English, just without as much drooling. You will need to be very, very careful in selecting a breeder, though, because with dogs the size of Mastiffs you must be terribly, terribly aware of avoiding temperament flaws. It goes without saying that you want to avoid any of the health problems associated with the breed.

I don't know that the Old English would be all that drooly under normal circumstances. We were warned that the Filas drooled, but they only seem to do so in hot weather - or when asked if they want a cookie, lol!

Since this will be your first giant, I think you've made a good choice of the Mastiff temperaments. The Old English is by far the most relaxed and tractable of the Mastiffs.

They should be willing to answer any questions you have by e-mail, including photos of the parents, grandparents, lists of titles, etc. and REFERENCES. They should also have lots of questions for you if they are the kind of breeders you want to deal with. If they're any good they will want to know what kind of home their dogs are going to.

Renee's the one to talk to on the big drooly breeds.

Make sure the breeder can answer any questions you ask about genetic diseases, personality problems, and medical testing. Or...you could always rescue! (I'm sure you all knew I was going to say that. I'd hate to disappoint anyone. )
