I've seen GSD police dogs scale fences. Seriously high ones. Probalby twelve feet. Steve and I were just stunned when we saw that. Who knew.

Good luck keeping your crazy man killer caged.

I think some of you are going a little nuts over this.

He justs wants a dog that he can order to attack if he's in danger. Rocky will let off some warning barks but I don't know that he'll realize if I'm in danger. In fact, he warms up to people after giving them some vicious barks. All they have to do is come close to him and talk in a nice voice.

I, like him, would want my dog to be trained to attack if ever I was in danger.

Rocky's like my best friend, the sweetest dog but some of you are going over board.

Who the hell said it was going to go attacking people? I guess you guys didn't see the word TRAIN.

That means if he's in danger, he'll say something, the dog will know that he's in danger and attack. I see nothing wrong with this.

Yesb ut Bigdog Rocky is still a puppy when he grows up he will become more protective on his own. That is our point why train when the dog could protect you out of love not just when anyone walks into the house and they know its their job.

He's rude and has said somethings about people here that is not too nice. Im not going to attack you but I do beleive it is better to build a bond with a dog and it will prtect you at its own will rather then train to attack and not be able to trust the dog.

My parents have a white GSD, trust me they need no extra training. She would not allow anyone but family (and that's just the ones she sees on a regular basis) into their home. My sister has known her all Angle's (the GSD) life but she still makes sure she calls her by her name before she comes inside.

My labrador Charlie was protective..he was also my hero..that kind of love isn't taught..it is a bond. I think most dogs will rise to the occasion if they feel their loved ones are in danger.shoot.even my cat did once....i don't think it is necessary to "teach" a dog to attack. In my opinion that is just asking for trouble. Causing a dog extra stress. For the police force fine..but leave it to the pros..i worked at a kennel that trained attack dogs (for one month before i quit disgusted and repulsed at their use of disposadogs) so i speak with a bit of experience for what i saw.. If you want to know what charlie did..i wrote about him at the Rainbow's bridge. Just love your dog..truly and with all your heart. That is enough right there for the training u need for protection.
bigdogdaddy..look up flight and fright responses of the human body sometime..there are a number of things that happen when you are in danger.your breathing quickens..your pupils dilate, your heartrate speeds up..you dump adreniline..are just a few...and you will let off a scent your dog will know instinctively. You won't have to tell him a thing.

Default Ooh! Good solution!! :D

I have had 2 clients in my time with "professionally trained" attack dogs. I was the last resort for both of them. If I didn't work out, it was straight off to be euthanized. They were dangerous. There is no national standard for people who "train" attack dogs, so any yahoo off the street with a mean streak will do it. They'll charge you an arm and a leg to give your dog so many emotional disorders that he'll more likely than not crack.

Here's an idea. Go for Schutzhund training! (http://www.dvgamerica.com/whatis.html) It's a dog sport that focuses on a dog's tracking ability, obedience, and protection. You can compete locally and nationally with your dog, and it gives him an excellent and safe education. It will teach him discipline and strengthen your relationship, and if you ever get into a situation he will know what to do. In my opinion, Schutzhund is a wonderful sport; like martial arts for dogs. It will give him fulfillment that regular attack training would not, and it won't destroy him mentally. In fact, GSDs tend to excel at Schutzhund, so you could have the next national champion on your hands! I would guess that there's any number of Schutzhund trainers in New York. I'd ask them to show me some credentials, and make sure you never let them do something to your dog you're uncomfortable with. It is possible to train for Schutzhund using only positive reinforcement, so don't let anyone convince you otherwise. I think this would be a wonderful solution for you.

Let me know if you need help finding a Schutzhund contact in your area.

PS - I can't stand PETA.

Hydro, the type of dog you are envisioning is not considerred a pet but a working dog. Alcan the K9 I mentioned earlier is a working dog and not a familly pet and is not treated as such. If you are going to be in constant contact with this dog, and if you are not the dog is secluded from others like when you are showerring, Im game for your idea.

Im a gun owner and was allmost a Marine, I was dropped from training after running for a month on ankles with stress fractures and bursitus (spelling?) in both hips, cant be a Marine if you cant run. Im well aware of NY gun laws, Im lucky to live in a state that dosent even require a lisence to carry concealed.

If your trainer does the same type of training our millitary and police does Im game, if you are planning on training this dog to kill, if this dog ever leaves your sight your sight you could be asking for trouble. If that a risk you are willing to take, be prepared.

You are doing what I tried to what I can never do, thank you for being a Marine.

Bottom line: a novice dog owner has absolutely no business with a dog "trained" to guard. Most self-styled experienced dog owners can't handle them either.

I've had German Shepherds for many years. They don't have to be trained to protect you - if you've given them any reason at all to love you. Mine have hauled my butt out of more than one bad situation without any ridiculous so-called attack training - which isn't really training, just mindless conditioning. And anyone who tells you they train dogs for law enforcement to kill is full of it. Law enforcement dogs are used to pursue and hold, not savage.
