What do you think of this bone idea?

For my moderate - aggressive bone-chewing mutt I've had a bit of success with big, natural bones. She seems to get sorta bored when they are a few days old...they also get a bit stinky, so I wouldn't gnaw it either.

My idea is this: Take those big, half-eaten bones and boil them. Once they're sterile (again) I could pack them with peanut butter (or whatever...heck, my crazy dog likes rye bread - go figure), then freeze them.

Seems like that would keep the bacteria, germs, etc. at bay while keeping the poor hollowed out leg of a dead cow interesting to the mutt?

no - please, please never ever give a dog a cooked, boiled, roasted or otherwise heat treated bone. they become brittle and can splinter, or cause intestinal impaction.

if you want to fill a chew toy with goodies, get a few kongs. stuff them with something yummy like yogurt, canned pumpkin, etc. (but not just plain PB, it's way too rich to feed in large amounts) and then freeze them .

as for the "stinkiness" of older bones, it's actually something most dogs very much enjoy. they generally prefer "ripe" stuff.
