Updates on the rescued Ohio dogs.

Just wanted to give ya'll an update. Cuddles and Katie (now renamed Khuno and Mikoa) are doing great. Mary is doing well, too. She goes to her forever home next weekend. I'll be driving her to Seekonk, MA.

Khuno and Mary ate like champs right from the start. Mikoa was a little picky for about the first week - she wouldn't eat anything unless I covered it in something that smelled good (I used chicken & beef broth, and tuna water). She's doing better now, eating without the tasty additive.

They're finally learning the routine. They have started coming back to the door after I let them out to potty, whereas before I had to go out and get them one by one. They still aren't reliably coming to me, but they're much less timid than they were initially.

For the first week, Khuno and Mikoa would run like crazy from me when they were loose, whether I was attempting to get ahold of them or not. Khuno now appears not frightened, but more interested in running around with the other dogs. He comes up to me freely, but not reliably when I call. Mikoa is still a bit timid. She won't run away from me when I approach her, she just lies down and cowers. It's pathetic looking but a step in the right direction - at least she stopped running. I really wonder if the loser that owned these dogs before had hit them. Mikoa seems so hand shy it breaks my heart.

They love all of my other dogs, as I knew they would. Arthur isn't exactly happy that there's a new male here, but he's getting over it.

As for their new names, "Mikoa" means "squirrel" in Abenaki-Penobscot language. I'm an eighth Penobscot Indian, and she is rather quick and frantic in her movement, much like a squirrel. She's also the same colors. "Khuno" is the god of snowstorms in Aymara mythology. And he's white, so I found that fitting. I think Mary's owner is keeping her name.
