cat owners - a question

My dog absolutely loves cats. I'm not currently in a position to get a cat, but I will be in the near future. I was wondering, are there cats who actually like dogs? I mean, I like cats and all, but if I got one, it would be mainly for my dog's benefit - she'd be thrilled, they'd be company for each other while I'm at work, etc. Are there cats who seem to really like dogs as opposed to simply being able to live with them?

My advice would be to contact your shelter and let them know you're looking for a cat that like dogs... It will probably take a while to find the right cat for you, but it'll be worth it

Well, yes. I know of many people who have both dogs and cats and they get along wonderfully. That is not so in our house, but we all survive!

I suggest local rescues in your area.. call them, tell them that you are looking for a dog-friendly cat, I am sure that they would be more than happy to help you. And take your dog with you to the meet and greet to ensure all is well.

Yup, and be prepared for all sorts of fun when you find the right kitty! Wrestling matches, races through the house, too many cute photo opportunities...

We convinced some friends to take a stray dog we found; a few months later, we found a cat that needed a home so the same friends took the cat, too. The dog and cat became best buddies, played together, slept together, the cat learned to open the cupboard doors and pull out bags of chips which the dog promptly opened so they could have a feast...

Thanks! I knew there were dog-friendly cats, but I was curious whether some cats actually enjoyed playing with and hanging out with dogs. My last dog had a cat she took naps with, but they went their separate ways after waking up. Hen would not be satisfied with that, she'd want to be buds. I didn't know if that was something cats did with dogs, so thanks.

When you look to adopt a cat, the shelter/rescue will tell you if they are "dog savvy" or not. "Dog-savvy" is the key word, and is very important. If you get a kitten, it'll be easy to adjust a kitten to a dog

I agree you should start your search by looking at kitties who like dogs.

My cats and dogs are very bonded. The kitties curl up with the dogs to take a nap and initiate play. They really do love eachother.

awwww I love dogs and cats that get along, I think it is adorable, those pics are great. I have seen pics of a cat cleaning her doggy companion, utterly adorable at how close they can be.

I'd think a kitten would be easiest to introduce to a dog as play mate.

My cat, as you said, just puts up with my pup; and not so much anymore, but she will hiss and chase him away.
