There are "monsters" out there, that are about double a normal Lab's weight. The neighbor's black monster is still growing, and is nearly 140 pounds. He's not fat at all, kind of skinny actually. His brother was visiting and is exactly the same size. He's got a head on him that's about 15" long, and the teeth are huge! He's a great dog, but keeps coming into my yard, where Molly still makes him miserable. She doesn't want him in her yard, and harrasses him until he leaves. King barely responds to him being there, and usually just ignores him. Last week, he growled at Molly, and King ran up and gave him the eye, and over on his back he went.

King and Molly together don't weigh more than 125 pounds. It's pretty funny to see Molly chase him around the yard, "punching" him the entire time.
I always thought that my labbie is skinny & tiny , she weighs about 57lbs@9 months now . The reason why I am so bothered about her size/weight is ...after surfing on a forum which its users 'competiting' against each other by having the BIGGEST LAB in the universal . I guess my lab is the TINIEST there . because some of 'em labs weighed up to 135lbs , that big a difference .

Labs are not supposed to see huge, gigantic dogs. That's not a lab. I hate seeing these short, fat labs, just as much I hate seeing tall, long ones. When I see a correctly built, fit lab, I ooo and ahhh over it!

Tira is 70 lbs at 2 years old - field size/looks/pedigree. The max weight for a female is 70 lbs (per AKC) and 80 lbs for a male. However, Gunner weighs almost the same as Tira and is only 6 months old. He comes from a "large" family. See pic below.

Field bred labs range so much there really is no "standard". So here you are breeding for performance and really cant get the best of both worlds. Many of the show bred labs do not perform as well in the field as the field bred. Not all but many. I have seen them flat out refuse to go into the water on a retrieve. They lack drive. So....Its already done...Its split What do you do? Pick the best of the lesser evil?
Heres an example of what a lab looked like way back before the 2 different types came along.

Here is what a show lab looks like now..There are some variances in the looks but to me not much. I dont show so what do I know anyways right? LOL

Ok a national field champion

See the difference? Also with these two differences if you cross breed them you are considered a back yard breeder or messed up in some way. So you are stuck with doing one or the other. Im sure in time this can be changed but with the attitudes on both sides of the fence I doubt it.
If you are lost and have no idea what i am talking about feel free to ask or send me a pm. Its a bit confusing I know!

I think the field dogs look so much healthier.

Guess I've got one of each then. Gunner's not a "show dog" but he's got the same look minus the short/extra stout/super thick tail. Tira's a flat out field Lab...plain and simple. I love my puppers and wouldn't have it any other way.

See!! That's what I'm talking about!! That's a LAB! Maybe the ears a tad bit longer and the nose a real teensy bit shorter, but other than that, perfect.

Now all that being said I try to breed to good looking field bred labs.
Here is the stud I used this litter I have now. Very handsome boy!

this is a dog from one of my first breedings. I just talked to the owner maybe a week ago. He is going to the eastern part of the state so he can spend this fall hunting. He is very pleased with his girl.

That site is gross

Momof7, You have very nice looking labs! They are, in my opinion, what Labs should look like!
