my puppy is racist

I forgot I was going to post about this the other day. For those that don't know I got her from a metis settlement and she must have been treated pretty badly even though she was only a baby She still submissive pees sometimes but is otherwise a happy, bubbly little girl.

So the other night I was picking up steve and his friend and she's native. I tried to get Sakari (who was on my lap while the car door was open) to sit in the back with this girl. Well she just freaked out and peed and was very upset. Steve tried to get her to 'meet' this girl and put her in the back seat. Well she just wedged her head between my arm and the door and didn't leave until we dropped that girl off.

Makes you wonder what happened to little Sakari! Whatever it was, it really made an imprint!

I know. I feel bad. She's wary of strangers but will always flop over and be submissive but once she's decided they are ok she'll play and be happy. I guess I'll have to have more native friends over. That's going to be hard. I hardly have any good friends as it is!

I have a similar story..
We got this lab from a bad situation. She was very submissive and scared of men. Jim took her to lumbermens to help socialize her after a few months.
A guy who Jim didnt know was caling her name and she ran out the door tail tucked and jumped in his car through the window. She got away from Jim because he was not expecting her to do anything like that...she was happy to see other people and was being good..
Turns out this man was a friend of her previous owner and told us how he would beat her with 2x4s or whatever was handy at the time
She remembered him poor girl and remembered what happend

Jasmine is afraid of people with afros. Go figure...

It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with previous bad experiences though, but with what the dog is used to.

People of different races look and smell different, which can be very confusing to dogs.

Case in point, the dane I had as a kid had never seen an African American until he was about 3 or 4 years old and he was very confused and insecure about the whole encounter, even though the poor guy wasn't threatening or unfriendly towards my dog in any way.

My daughters father is brown and Caiza goes absolutely crazy when he sees him. He has actually lunged to get to him. I always crate Cai when he comes to my house since then because he is very territorial anyway with most people who are strangers to him. My little girl is obviously bi-racial because I am white so I can't say he hates all races of people because he loves ALL women but he is just not fond of men, particularly dark skinned men

Juni doesn't like gipsy people (honestly I am careful wiht them too since one drew a knife because he didn't like the fact my dog barked at him. I don't know if the guy wanted to stab Junior or my grandmother, but it makes me kinda disregard them even more.

Before you say anything to protect the gipsy I have to tell you that in my country we do have a problem with them. Almost all are involved in crimes, thefts, and many bad things. I still have to meet some from this "race" to work as a decent person.

Poor baby!

My dads Rottie (Harley D.) doesn't like African Americans or Mexicans. He'll bark at them as they walk by the house or if they come in the yard without my dad's permission. However, once my dad tells him "it's o.k." Harley stops barking and accepts that they are there.
