I wrap them up in a piece of ham, it works wonders. So much easier than with cats!

This sounds mean, but it really wasn't; had to be done somehow.

When I was taking care of Charley's mother in the last part of her illness (Parkinson's) she'd gotten very contrary - being eighty-eight years old gets you a great deal of slack, but some things you just gotta do - and decided she wasn't going to take her Parkinson's medication. That really wasn't an option; if she didn't take it she'd become paralyzed so she absolutely had to have it.

Well, she spit it out in my face! Bear in mind, this is a woman who had been taking her morning medicine laying on her back in bed! I couldn't do that if you held a gun to my head . . . But she spit those two little blue pills right in my face. That surprised me and to be honest, it irritated me a tad. I put them back in her mouth and she spit them out on me again!

"Okay old girl," I thought, "we can do this the easy way or the hard way, and you just bought yourself the hard way." So I crushed two more pills up in some applesauce and got a spoon and went back into battle. Got the spoonful of applesauce with the crushed pills in her mouth. She spit them out again! She missed me that time because I stood off to the side.

I was really cranked by that time.

I went and got two more pills and came back into the room.

She looked at me and called me several unladylike names . . .

I looked her in the eye: "You've got to take your meds. There's no option. You're going to take them because I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Do you want to go ahead and take these pills?"

She spit at me again.

I looked at her and said, "I've given plenty of pills to plenty of animals and you really don't have a choice."

I got behind her, rested her head back against me, reached around under her jaw, put my fingers and thumb in those pressure points, popped that mouth open, popped those pills in the back of her throat, closed that jaw and held it, then stroked her throat until she swallowed.

You can't imagine anything any madder than she was! That's the last time she gave me any guff over taking her medicine though! The funniest part was when I told Charley about it he got furious, turned red, and went in her room and told her she'd better be glad it was me instead of him. He'd just have held her mouth shut and held her nose until she had to swallow! (I don't think ??? he'd really have done that, but she believed him, lol!)

That was one stubborn little woman! Scares me a little when I look at Charley sometimes . . .

That was actually a very funny story! HA! She shouldn't have been spitting her medicine at you, especially since you were only giving it to her because you care. That was a great mental picture, you giving her the medicine like that.

oh you would have made such a good nurse..ohhhhh could i tell you stories you don't want to hear!!!! Oh your a good woman lol. It takes the ones that really care to do waht isn't always comfortable...One old man use to shake his fist at me and tell me "you ain't got anymore sense than a god dang dog!" I said yes sir Mr....then i would take one of his hands and put it on the opposite rail telling him to hang on because i wans't going to catch him>>.he couldn't have fallen anywhere but back into the bed, but he had terrible bowels and needed to be cleaned. You do what you have to do. He would glare at me afterwards and tell me he was going to SUE ME..and i said yes sir Mr...while i got his bed ready and his tv turned to his favorite show. Then he would tell me to take his teeth out..and i would say Mr ....you take the upper plate out first because i am not putting my finger in your mouth..he did..then i removed the bottoms for him..he said make sure you put in the salt..i said yes sir Mr....then i would offer him one of his favorite candies.and place his water glass where e could reach it .and leave the room..this went on every night for a year..god love them all...it is so hard to be old.

I always felt so bad for little Miss Blanche - how I always thought of her. It was so obvious that she was just born a generation or two early. She went to college and taught school afterward, when she really wanted to do something out in the world. She wasn't a woman who ever wanted to be married or have children, at least not until she felt like she'd accomplished something out in the big, wide world. But she spent her whole life circumscribed by what people expected of her and did all those things women of her generation were supposed to do, and in the end had a bitter and long old age with a lingering, debilitating illness. She didn't even get to look back and at least have the satisfaction of feeling that she'd borne the sacrifice "nobly" because she fought it tooth and nail every step of the way. Obstinant and self-centered; hobbled by her preoccupation with what people might think; down right hateful sometimes - but the other side of her tried to be helpful to other people and she wanted so much to improve other people's lives through being able to teach and she did want so much to love something - she just didn't really ever figure out that you have to consciously step away from self-centeredness to love wholeheartedly. So many contradictions in one person's skin. It always hurt me to realize that she'd probably never been truly contented.

Everyone should be able to be contented - at least during some portion of their lives.

But you have your art and your dogs, Smkie, and you are able to love with no reserve. That's what gives you the contentment of the soul. You care for your Mother and Hyia and Aaron out of love - not just a sense of duty and obligation.

I am just so frazzled trying to figure out how to be all for all....thank you for your words....i always loved the old people that still had a bit of fight left in them..they still had a spark of life right to the end. Compared to those that had completely given up and were simply living corpses. I hope if i live that long i want to be a holy terror and leave this world with some dignity.

That's one of the things I loved about Miss Blanche - she went on her own terms and tried to impose her own will on everyone to the very end, lol! That cantankerous, ornery little woman had my respect!

Oh, she tried her best not to let anyone catch her being "soft."

When I go I want people to throw a wake, get blistered and laugh and joke and tell wild stories about me - true or not! Better that people be celebrate that you passed through their lives on your journey than cry because you've gone on the road ahead

Strayed a bit, haven't we, Smkie!

Also if you try stroking their throat that makes them swallow too. My grandma's old dog we had to put the pill in and then stroke his throat to get him to swallow it. It worked too!
