Hi
My pup is 5 months old (a cavalier king charles) and when we took her to the vet for injections 2 months ago we asked the vet about her skull. Her skull is normal but towards the back, in the middle it goes up a bit, like a lump and then goes back down and then you have the spine. the vet said it was normal andit's fine, thing is before you could feel it, now you can see it too, is this normal??? I know its not a lump because it would move a little. Any one have the same with their dog??? |

I think you are referring to the sagittal crest. Here is a link to the anatomy of a dogs skull, you can see there is a rise toward the back of the skull. Click on the lateral veiw.
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.ed...omy/index.html It seems to be more prominent in some breeds than others and is perfectly normal.

Yep, if that's what you're talking about, it's completely normal. Dobes have big ones. We used to joke that that was where they kept their brains. I'd be irritated with your vet for not explaining it to you to your satisfaction.

It's interesting that you joked about that being where they keep their brains, Emma. Around here, it's referred to as a "wisdom bump." It's actually a pretty good indicator of how wide a dog's head is probably going to end up being. It's a very pronounced indicator in molossers and hounds. You should see how pointed a little Fila puppy's head is - and then they GROW to be big and wide!
If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense and is a great thing if you're a mama dog having to whelp the little monsters. Those pointy heads are a lot easier to squeeze out!
