Question Pocket Beagles

Hi there,

I have finally decided to get a beagle after all the researching of Doxies and Mini Schnauzers. But as I was doing my research for the beagle, I've came across a few breeders that breed "pocket" beagles or mini beagles. I know that only the standard beagle is recognized by the AKC. What is this pocket beagle? Does it really exsist? And if the breeder only offers 48-72 hours on their puppies health guarantee, is that a red light to RUN?? Because I have noticed almost all breeders of the standard beagle offers a one year health gurantee against any genetic defects their dogs. I really would like some more info from anyone! I would hate to jump on an impulse and make a mistake! Oh and here is a site of one of the pocket beagle breeders:

Please let me know what you all think about this!

Thanks!

You're instinct is absolutely correct. That is one of the worst health guarantees I think I've ever seen. As if anything could show up in that period of time.

Stick with people who breed to the standard. Have you looked at the Beagle national breed club? Almost all national breed clubs have breeder referals, and are only too happy to assist someone searching for a new pet.

Stick with a breed standard !!! These people are ruining breeds ! Pocket/purse size/ etc etc !!! I went to PetSmart the other day and couldn't believe the little " carriers " and " clothes for these critters. Yes, dogs are becoming very popular as " children " ....Hamsters were in my day !

Pocket beagles were actually bred a long long time ago, around the 14th century they were very popular with British royalty so they aren't a new thing. However it does not fit todays standard and will probably have lots of problems.

There are 2 Varieties of Beagles recognized by the AKC. They are 13" and 15". There is no such recognized breed as a miniature Beagle, pocket Beagle or toy Beagle. These terms are coined by puppy mills and backyard breeders as a selling tool so please beware. NO Beagle breeder can breed for size and most litters will consist of 13" and 15" puppies.

It looks like a puppy mill to me

I suggest looking up the stickies in the breeding forum to see how to recognize a good breeder. A good breeder won't even be more expensive.

I have a lifetime health and temperament guarantee from my breeder. And my dog was only $500.
