Yup...if I don't like it and it doesn't fit the dog...why not?

I'd definitely change it if it didn't seem right.

sure. dogs don't have any emotional attachment to their names.

luce's shelter name was grace. who knows what her name was before the shelter people dubbed her that. i brought her home and called her luce/eleusis and that was that.

mushroom's name i kept because it was the perfect name for him.

the little poodle i used to have who was 15 1/2 when i got her was named siren, and i kept that as well, because it was just who she was. i had known her as siren for a long time before i brought her home, and it wouldn't have been right in my mind to change it (though she didn't know her name anyway, she was so freaking senile, so it wouldn't have made any difference).

Yup, if I didn't like it I would definetly change it. I would also change it for the fact I don't know how they where treated in their previous home so I wouldn't want their name to be associated with anything negative.

Yes, I'd rename a dog. It really doesn't take them too long to learn a new name, and it doesn't have to sound anything like their previous name as a lot of people think. It makes it easier if it does sound like the previous name, but they'll catch on either way. I would've renamed Winston, but he had his for his entire life and my family thought it suited him eventhough we all hated it so we decided to keep his name. That, and we couldn't think of anything else for him anyway.

Oh I should also mention I name a lot of the dogs (the strays) that come into our shelter and encourage people to change their name's to something they like better.

Depends on the name (or if the dog's name is even known - most of my dogs were/are throwaways). I did find out that Murphy and Michaleen's previous names were BJ and Grizzly but by that time they were already responding to their 'new' names. My elderly aunt actually had a poodle named Poopsie - I would changed that name in a flash!!
I've always kept my horse's names, for some reason, even if I wasn't that fond of it...

Me too. My parents had me rename a cocker spaniel I had when I was little. She was a puppy when we got her and the people that had her named her Mai Tai, but since I was only 5 my mom didn't want my dog to be named after an alcoholic beverage so I renamed her Sandy.

I feel it depends on the situation.... " Ollie " could have been name by the HS or his adoptive owners who turned him back in.... he responded to the name , so I kept it. When changing a name ... I suggest a combination for change over...then drop the name you don't like.
