I handle, and I see sooo many people with intact dogs saying they would like to breed their male/female... looking at their dog I ask, "Are you joking?" Even a titled dog may or may not be bred, just because it has Ch. in front of it's name doesn't mean it would be an asset to the breed. I think that's a bit off topic.

I don't know one responsible breeder who would let their puppies go to homes intact unless they were going to a show home (and lets just say they don't let them go to just anyone ). Things happen, dogs get out, dogs come in, they don't want to take that risk.

I'm 100% behind s/n, and 1,000% behind early s/n:

How is an owner of a "show" dog more responsible than a pet owner? Show dogs can get out too, and have "oops" litters and create more mutts. Just because its a show dog doesnt mean it will be only atrracted to other "champions" of its same breed. A dog is a dog.

So true.

But what's the point of having an unaltered dog if it's just a pet? Or if s/he retires from the ring and wouldn't be, like I said, an asset to the breed?

Better question would be, if it is just a pet, why take the risk?

its not tht the show owner is more responsible but they have a reason to keep their dog intact which isnt (because i feel like it) which isnt a proper reason, actually theres no reason to keep a pet quality dog intact that outways the risks of it,

I wouldn't necessarily say a show dog owner would be more responsible, but perhaps look at it this way: A show dog owner has a lot more to lose if their dog (male or female) is accidentally bred. They would be faced with either spaying their quality bitch, or whelping a litter of puppies that would all be s/n and placed in pet homes. Their bitch is then out of the ring for a period of time they didn't plan for, which can throw planning for shows or another breeding off for as long as it takes the bitch to whelp, raise pups and fully recover.

And say a male got loose, they could be faced with having to neuter a quality male if he contracted a doggy STD.

So, in my opinion, a "show dog" owner has a bit more motivation to keep their dogs securely confined and prevent accidental litters.

Yup, that's why we test for brucellosis (spelling?) before breeding. Anyone know of any other doggy STDs?

BTW PW, I love your avatar!
