Does anyone have any information or a good informational site about small breeds such as:

- Shih Tzu's
- Pomeranian's
- Chihuahua's
- Yorkshire Terrier'ss
- Papillion's
etc..

or if anyone could tell me a little bit more about these breeds as to temperament wise, training ability (easy - hard) .. any information would be great. i'm actually looking for a puppy for my best friend and she would like to try a small breed for now.. thank you!

Has your friend thought about looking at the shelters?

Hi, since I have 4 Shih Tzus, I will tell you what I know about them. This little breed can be very stubborn and headstrong, in other words they if they want something they won't quit bothering you until they get their way. Also they can be hard to house train, if they go in the house a couple of times they will begin to think that is where they go and it is very hard to convince them to go outside once they establish a pattern of going inside. That's the bad points, the good points are they are very loving and cuddly. Shih Tzus get along with everybody and other animals really well. My love to go to the vets because they get to visit other people and other pets. I almost forgot, they also require a lot of grooming since their hair grows. These dogs don't shed, so you will need to find a groomer who can trim the dogs hair about once a month or so. If you don't keep the facial hair trimmed or pulled away from the eyes, they can develope problems that may lead to blindness, like dry eye. If your friend is looking for a sweet cuddly little dog, the Shih Tzu is great, but remember they can also be very stubbborn. If you want to talk, just e-mail me.

Thank you so much everyone who replied! actually we have been looking at shelters (there are only 2 nearby ones in our local area)

I wish i could adopt some, but the ones here require background check, house visit and all that stuff! she's looking into a few dogs at the shelter, so i'll follow up with what happens.. thanks everyone!

she's still undecided about which breed! she wants one of each!!

Hi. Don't forget about www.petfinder.com. There are many Purebreed rescue organizations who foster the dogs at peoples homes instead of an actual shelter. I found my chihuahua on Petfinder. I found a chihuahua rescue only about 35 minutes away.

Good Luck!

Tammy
