Default Feeding Stogie....Dry & Canned, too much?

We have a 8 lbs. dachsund miniature...STOGIE (what else do you name a cigar shaped dog?)
When we got him at around 6 weeks old, the guy told us he'd been eating Science Diet dry food... so we continued that. It made him sick... he couldn't keep it down. The ppl at Petsmart told us it could be the new enviroment the dog was in or that science diet is crap.... or a combination of the two. so she suggested for a small breed like him, NutroMax dry and maybe a little warm water on top. and that seemed to work for several weeks (about two or three 4 lb bags worth anyway), then he just STOPPED eating it all together. He would nibble at it to stay alive, but wouldn't eat it like before.

We tried mixing it with Can/Package/Wet food, which he would eat the wet and not eat any of the nutro dry. Anyway: we eventually switched him to Purina Beneful, which he loveD. He's been eating it dry, no mixing for a while (several months) - and eating it all! No adverse effects on his stomach or anything. Now again, we're going through the not eating it phase. And again, we've started mixing it with wet can food... we've mixed it with Alpo slices, Caesar, Nutro wet packages, Nutro canned, Pedigree and I'm sure others too trying to find what he likes best.... He'll eat the wet/can/pouch food, but leave the majority of the dry (if not all of it)

We're feeding him twice a day, once in the morning (or mid-morning) and once in the evening. We try to reserve the wet/mixture food for dinner in the evening, but he's not eating during the day because of the lack of wet mixture. His normal routine has been to eat about 1 cup of food per day (1/2 cup per session). The wet mixture we've been doing... 1 can lasts for 4+ meals. My wife has these tiny little square containers and a regular sized dog food can devides perfectly into 4 of these squares. (not sure how Women always seem to have the right tupperware for any occasion!?) So when we open the can, it produces 4 servings which get put in the fridge, and we'll microwave each one for about 20 seconds before feeding him just to get the chill out of it...

So now I've covered how we feed him, you're getting an idea of how much we feed him - oh and btw: the can food/wet food is usually the slices, cubes, etc with gravy... not the Pate` type stuff.

Are we feeding him too much? not enough? is it common for dogs to want a variety after a while? Is it a good idea to switch the food every now and then?

My wife and I are at the point of just feeding him the canned, since thats all he's eating anyway.

I'd opt for one the "super premium foods"..... feed 75% kibble and 25% can. If you read on in the "food topic" forums (which is this here) you will find many suggestions on great quailty foods.

It's my opinion that most dogs go through this phase of not eating when their excercise level has dropped. If it were my dog, I would take them for a good walk before each meal..... having them work out never seems to fail when you have problems with them eating. It's their habit to "work for food"

If all he'll eat is canned just feed him canned then. Make sure you get a good brand.

Natural Blanalance, Innova, Cainidea (sp?, eagle pack, and solid gold are the ones that come to mind right now.

i've heard changing foodswhen they refuse to eat makes them picky eaters... not sure if that's true or not since i've got a dog that is trained to eat anything i point at and say eat lol.

I'll have to see if I can find some of this premium (super premium) food....

WHEN HE EATS IT, he likes the Beneful mixed with canned something. I think the lack of excercise just might be the fault here... I'm going to try walking him or playing with him before eating --- the chase the ball game, he loves that one and see if that helps his appetite.
