Default Polydactyl Cats

I met a cat once that appeared to have thumbs. Turns out it isn't that rare for cats to be born with extra toes. It may be considered a freak of nature but I think just one extra toe is neat looking and the cats can use this sort of toe/thumb to do things they maybe could not have done before. Or maybe it's a form of cat evolution.

Our Siamese, Toby is polydactyl. He was 4 extra toes, and his tumbs are super long, he can pick up anything. I will try to get a picture of it.

I always heard that cats who have the extra toes are inbred to some degree. Don't know how true it is. At our shelter, we once had a cat with 8 toes on each foot! I was dying to call him Octopussy, but our manager thought people might find that inappropriate. Named him Hemmingway instead after those multitoed Hemmingway cats.

I tried taking a picture, but it's too hard to see. I'll try to take a brighter, clearer, one today.

I had a polydactyl cat when i lived in MN. She had 5 or 6 toes on each paw. Hemingway was known to have a lot of polydactyl cats. The key that he used to live on in Florida still has a large population of cats that can be traced back to his cats.

the place we got our husky from was by the power plant(I think davis bessie the one that was shut down for leaking and what not!) and all the cats had extra toes and I swear I saw a bunch of the deformed frogs too. Creeped me out cuz the lady had all her kids playing in the water One of the people with us asked if tawny would glow in the dark

they really are pretty common around here. I have heard of people selling them for hundreds of dollers in places but they are not that hard to find around here. I think it was a recessive gene so they don't necessarilly have to be inbred, especially if there is a big population around, but I guess it helps!
