Default Smkie, help w/ teaching not to pull

OKay, yesterday on our walk I used the walking technique that you used with Vic, on Frodo. Overall it went pretty well, but I do have a few questions (I thought that I would make this a thread instead of a PM in case anybody else was trying this and had the same questions). Here we go:

1) This may sound really stupid but, when you do this, is the dog supposed to stay right next to you or can it be more of a loose leash walking?

2) What do you do if the dog pulls sideways, b/c Frodo likes to walk in the grass next to the sidewalk, or if a good smell is off to the side he will turn and pull towards it.

3) After a while of this Frodo seemed to get really frustrated, like he didn't understand why I was doing this. Then when I would turn around he would just stop walking and stand there, or walk really slowly right behind my feet. Is this normal?

Well, I'm not smkie, but that's how I taught my border not to pull.

1.) If you want the dog to stay right next to you, shorten the leash so the dog has to walk next to you. If you don't mind where the dog walks, just hold where you please.

2.) Walk the other way. If he goes to sniff the grass, walk the other way, turning in a circle, and then start onto your walking path again.

3.) My dog hasn't done that really. She has stopped a few times, looking at me, but once I reached the end of the leash, she started walking again. Once she was at my side, I gave my marker word and treated.
No touchy.

I dont know about sideways pull, as soon as Vic had any tension on the leash at all i would about face and go the other way until there was none, i want him level with my knee and my leash is only a foot or so. I will ask Kelly, she trained a dog with this method last week and see what she says. Maybe she will come answer here and answer. I know she posted on some thread recently on this topic.
I do insist on a heads' up..sniffing he can do on his own time. I want the leash so that i can hold it with one finger if i want, no tension at all.

and then in came a little white kitten,

I've been doing this with Tink too, since I read your post vic, she's 12 weeks, is this too young to expect her not to sniff on a walk? She's teeny, not even 4 pounds, so I have her halter on, and she tends to sort of pull sideways, and then kidn of look like a drunken sailor as I continue on....
I keep it kind of short, just a few minutes at a time, but in our yard she's always on leash, so I do let her relax and play around other than that- is this too confusing for her? i've got my 'walk' word "c'mon!",is this enough?
Thanks pw for doing the thread...we all need to know!

Well, I took Tink on a walk around the block-and she was miserable! She whined b/c she tried to run after ds,so after 1/2 way, I got him to walk behind us, then she did it loose leash, till then she struggled endlessly- my 3 pound pup made my arm sore... even after she did it, she still kept whining at me, like she was ticked that i made her walk beside me...she's got attitude to spare anyway...but i could really use some advice on if I was doing right to continue like this, and how often?
