Default Presa Canarios...

Ok, so I've been looking around for good breeders, and the closet one I found is in WI (Im in CA). I spoke to her today and she advised that because I have both a male and a female a presa would not fit in well into my household.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this breed of dog? Regardless of how well socialized will they still be dog aggressive?

I'd just like to get a second opinon.

I dont have any experience with presas, but have talked to a guy that breeds presas and corsos and he said pretty much the same thing. They sure are awesome dogs though. To get some more info on the breed, elpresa.com is a good place to ask.

Not to highjack this thread but could someone tell me the difference between a Cane Corso and a Presa Canario? (Besides area of origin)

Color difference but shape and temperments seems very similar. Any big differences?

I guess Cane's muzzle is shorter "ideally".

CCs are a VERY old breed, PC's have been around since the 1800's.

CCs are working dogs, you find them in rural farms in Italy, guarding and herding. PCs were developed for pit fighting.

CC's have a more solid body with a blocky head, PCs tend to be "looser".

Both are stubborn fools!

With any type of working breed that you are looking at, you will run into same sex dog aggression.

Yes the Corso, by standard, does have a shorter muzzle and a blockier head. Temperaments are very similiar. Both of them have great guarding instincts, as the Corso was used as a farming and working dog, which included guarding the herds and farms. The Presa was used as a fighting dog, but was also used for farm work, hunting, guarding, just like the Corso.

I have always thought that the Presa has a more guarding instinct.

Both are very intelligent breeds....

I have been good friends with a couple of owners and trainers that work with Presas. I would really consider what the breeder is telling you as good advice. It will be easier if your other dogs will be willing to let the Presa be the alpha among them.

If you get a Male, then you will probably have issues with your current male. If you buy a female, then you will probably have issues with your current female. Most of the times two females are worse than two males. Keep in mind that the Presa is a VERY dominating breed. What may happen is that this dog may be fine with your current dogs, even up to a few years. But when it decides that it wants to switch to the alpha, then it could get messy.

I'll give you one example. I am very good friends with a owner of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. He had two males that he raised from puppyhood, and grew to be 3 and 4 years old. They were fine all through the years until, one day the submissive male decided that he wanted to be alpha and killed the other male. These were retrievers.
Keep in mind that if this happens between most dogs and a Presa, that the other dog will not make it.

This doesn't mean that your dogs won't live happy lives together, but you will have to be sure that you prepare for the worst. Obedience classes, socialization is a must for this breed.

What breeds are your other two dogs? Do you have experience with any large dominating breeds like the Presa? That will have a lot to do with it as well...

Wow. That's the thing I just couldn't understand that even though they were raised from puppyhood they said that once they hit around two, two and a half "there would be a big mess!", (she kept saying that)...

My girls a rott/dobe and my males a pitty. I understood that I would obviously have to a do a bit more work with the presa considering it's innate nature to be dog/human aggressive, but I had no idea that dogs in general would turn on each other if they were raised from puppyhood. I've never heard of anything like you mentioned actually happening to someone....
Maybe I'll just have to stick to something a little more low-key....
