Up here, large fluffy dogs are pretty common actually. Berners, Leonbergers, Newfies, guardian breeds, Malamutes, etc. So are molossers-boerboels, cane corsos, dogue de bordeaux, etc. It's strange to hear people say Catahoulas are rare, in Florida they were everywhere, and maybe like only like $150/puppy from any given breeder.

It would probably be easier to list breeds I haven't met . I'm fairly certain I've met at least one of every AKC recognized breed.

Outside of viewing at a conformation show? Let's see..I do have a Kangal that comes into my store frequently. Salukis. One Otterhound. There are a crazy amount of Briards here (a few breeders). There seems to be an influx of oddball sporting breeds... Spinone Italiano, PBGV, WH Griffon, Boykin, Fields. I've met an Australian Terrier, quite a few Norwich/Norfolk Terriers. Irish Water Spaniel. American Hairless Terriers. Klee Klei. Clumber Spaniel (that dog was a MESS with health issues). Manchester Terrier.

I have met a Polish Tatra Sheepdog. That is the most rare breed of dog I have met as I know they are not fairly common in the US.

I've seen some cool uncommon breeds at shows but I guess that's cheating! Here are the ones I've met out and about/not at dog events:

2 Portuguese Podengo Pequenos (same owner)
Dutch Shepherd
A few Cane Corso - they seem to be getting more popular here
Berger Picard
Irish Water Spaniel
and I saw my first field spaniel out and about a few days ago! I was pretty excited, haha.

I was a vet tech so I've met a lot.

As far as everyday life goes, my in-laws had an English Shepherd. One of my coworkers has a Pudelpointer pup.

I met a couple of Tai Ridgebacks when we were in New Orleans a couple years ago.

I'd say the rarest breed in the area is a gorgeous Great Pyr. I worry about how hot a dog like that would get, though, when it reaches 111 degrees. I would like to own a CO someday, but I'd rather have that happen in a more moderate climate.

A couple Borzoi at one time.
A few Chessies which are somewhat uncommon outside of duck circles.
American Water Spaniel. Just about everything below them on the registration list is a small show only terrier or a hound where the akc isn't the main registry.

Where are all the Beagles? Top 5 in AKC registrations? I've seen more Borzoi in the last year than Beagles.
