Default Snakes - Talk to Me!

What do you have? Pictures? What would you get? Talk me out of it! Someone tell me I DON'T need a snake!

The monthly reptile fair is tomorrow, I might go JUST to look.. but for the past couple months, I've really wanted to get back involved with reptiles and put together a setup for a snake. I've kept reptiles before (a Leopard Gecko that lived for 16 years, and a couple Viper geckos). A friend of a friend is willing to give me a Cornsnake (I think it's a wild type, Okeetee maybe), but I've done a lot of reading on Hognose and more recently Rosy Boas. I want something on the smaller end, mainly because I don't want to keep upgrading enclosure sizes. I'm not in a huge rush, either. Monthly reptile fair makes things pretty accessible.

Get one. Do it do it do it. Because seriously, why wouldn't you? From what I've learned, it seems that once you have a proper enclosure set up, snakes are relatively simple and inexpensive to own.

Hognose snakes are incredibly cute and if you get one, there will have to be tons of pictures. I don't really know much about them, though, just that they're pretty popular as pets. A corn snake is probably one of the best options because they typically have a nice temperament and are good eaters. I know there are several Chazzers here who own or have owned corn snakes and have a lot of experience with them! Another snake to consider is a ball python if you like slower moving and docile snakes. Because they are terrestrial snakes and aren't very active, they actually do well in a fairly small tank for their size. I think males can be kept happily in a 30-40 gallon tub/terrarium into adulthood and beyond?

Well, I went. And I DIDN'T come home with anything! Go me for self control.

I did get to handle three different Hognose of varying sizes… LOVE them. That'll probably be what I end up with. Corns are cute and colorful, but OMG Hogfaces. Held a nice Rosy, too… if I don't get a Hog, I may get a Rosy instead.

Now to put together a setup. The next reptile show I can hit is February 1st… we'll see.

Get one..because I can't. LOL!

I want a Kenyan Sand Boa and a Hognose like you would not believe. Another reason to have a hognose...they play dead. And it's adorable

If you need some sand boa/hognose eye candy I recommend http://sandboamorphs.com/ and http://envyhognoses.com/ (same people own both)
Great photography, gorgeous snakes.

I really am partial to the smaller snakes. They are just so CUTE!!

I thought about a sand boa.. I just can't get over their.. shape! They're funny shaped! :P But they do come in many awesome morphs..

And Hognoses… ATTITUDE. I want a cute little snake that plays OMGCOBRA. I got hissed at by 6" of snake in a deli cup. How. freaking. cute.

Envy Hogs are GORGEOUS. If money were no object, I love the anaconda/superconda morphs.

They ARE super weird shaped. But they're so cuuute Like huge worms. They're also so much cheaper than a hognose when you start getting into morphs. Awesome morph sand boa = 900 tops. Awesome morph hognose = 8,000

Any of the pastel/coral/lavender colorish morphs in the hognoses just do it for me. I love them. Fortunately for my wallet I also really like the earth tone, "normal" snakes. I would own a normal hognose in a heartbeat.

For the record, I told Ryan when we get a house there WILL be a reptile room. Full of snakes. Snakes everywhere. And a gecko or two. Because I will be rich someday
