So, I had a puppy foster that ended up dying of rabies. We found her in a parking lot with her siblings - she was probably infected by a rabid bat (Dept of Health thinks anything larger would've just killed the puppy) and the rabies didn't surface till a month after we had her.

I had to get the post-exposure, along with the 15 other dog daycare employees since she was fostered through my work at the time and came to work with me.

I hope you didn't get the post exposure vaccination before hearing the results. You'll hear in a week and even if the cat is rabid, you'll still be okay. The post-exposure was covered by workman's comp but it was $8,000 a person.

Rabies does transmit through blood and other tissues. There are a few very well documented cases of people getting rabies through transplants. The normal mode of spread is through bites though.

Best of luck with this mess. Rabies PE shots suck.

Well, the results are back and the cat was not rabid!!! Yay! The ER doctors wouldn't start the shots until getting the results because they believed the chances of me contracting it were too low, so I did not get any post exposure shots.

Lesson for the week: grab towel or blanket for injured cats/dogs BEFORE attempting to pick them up....
