Default Mix Breeds in AKC Tracking Tests

Word on the street is that Mixed Breeds/All Americans/Canine Partners (call them what you want) will be allowed into AKC tracking tests effective 1 January 2014. This also should mean that mix breeds should be eligible to earn versatility awards.

Of course it will be like rally, obedience, and agility in that clubs will still be able to decide on a whim that they don't feel like including the mix breeds -- they have to actually check the box that says it's okay for the mix breeds to play with the rest of the all-breed folks at that particular event. And mix breeds still have to be s/n'd to have the privilege of taking part.

... but I digress. Anyway, just thought I'd share the news.

From the AKC Tracking Rulebook:

CHAPTER 1. Section 10. Dogs Eligible to Compete.
A dog must be six (6) months of age or older to participate in tracking events. As used in these regulations, the word “dog” refers to either sex. Dogs with a PAL (Purebred Alternative Listing), or ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege), number must be spayed or neutered in order to compete.
Note: Effective 01/01/14 – Dogs that have been listed with AKC Canine
Partners, that have been spayed or neutered, may participate providing their listing number has been listed on the entry form and the test-giving club is holding an all breed test and is offering participation for dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program.

CHAPTER 8. Section 1. Versatile Companion Dog Title.
The AKC will issue a Versatile Companion Dog certificate and will permit the use of the letters VCD following the name of each dog that completes the titles as follows
Versatile Companion Dog 1 (VCD1) – CD, NA, NAJ, [TD or TDU] or CD, NAP, NJP, [TD or TDU]
Versatile Companion Dog 2 (VCD2) – CDX, OA, OAJ, [TD or TDU] or CDX, OAP, OJP, [TD or TDU]
Versatile Companion Dog 3 (VCD3) – UD, AX, AXJ, TDX or UD, AXP, AJP, TDX
Versatile Companion Dog 4 (VCD4) – UDX, MX, MXJ, VST or UDX, MXP, MJP, VST
(Note: Effective 01/01/14 Dogs listed with AKC Canine Partners are eligible for the Versatile Companion Dog titles.)

I didn't realize that the AKC was still being picky! Eventually, Bayleigh will be reg with AKC through the Canine Partners program so we can do Rally. Guess when that time comes I'll have to do a lot of research before attending an event.

It's about darn time, if you ask me!

Our club is excited for this, and we do plan on welcoming mixed breeds at our tracking tests.

I think it'd great to have more to do and possibly title mixes. A lot of clubs don't have enough entries to make it worth while $ wise. This will open up the entries more

Woo! Maybe Snipe and Z can track competitively! I was thinking of getting them both BHs so they could do IPO tracking at one point, so this is handy news!

How do you check akc trials to see if they are open to mixed breeds? It still seems like bullshit to me that clubs can decide that they don't want to allow mixed breeds at their events.

Our club's tracking tests fill up every time, and we always have to turn people away. It's hard to test a bunch of dogs, because clubs only have so much space.

This is another reason why I'm pretty excited for the TDU title... our club is strongly considering holding TDU tests as well.

Exciting times for the world of AKC tracking!

Sadly the local AKC club I belong to has a lot of "oldies" in it who are set in their ways and believe that allowing mixed breeds to participate is blasphemy. Probably the majority of the club wants to allow mixes in but the majority of people who come to the meetings to vote are the ones set in their ways.
