Where are you located, and what is the weather like?
I'm in Canby - it's about a half hour south of Portland. I love Oregon in so many ways you can't go wrong no matter where you are. Canby has two state parks within it that are awesome for letting the dogs run and there are so many places within a half hours drive to go its ridiculous.

How pet friendly is your area?
Pretty pet friendly. Most people love dogs around here so that's nice, though they generally are not allowed in stores unless its a pet store.

Are there a lot of training clubs in your area? Trials? Places to rent rings?
There are a lot of training clubs around for sure, and the local fairgrounds have at least 1 or 2 trials a month sometimes every weekend. Once you join a training club there are multiple locations around you can rent from as well.

If you're in a more rural area, how far do you need to drive to get to a reasonably populated area?
Canby is a small town and has rural areas but I don't know that it's really rural. Regardless, it's a half hour to Portland, a half hour to Salem, and the closest dog obedience training club is about 20 minutes away.

Are apartments/houses for rent generally pet friendly?
In this area yes, I had no problem finding a place to live with two 30 lb dogs, and the majority of places around me are willing to accept pets, and while I have not experienced it I've been told that if your dog has a CGC and is on the "do not accept" list, they have to accept them anyway? Don't quote me on it though.

Do you enjoy living there? What would you change if you could?

I LOVE OREGON!!! MOVE HERE!!!! It's amazing. So many places to explore, so dog friendly, and there's always some kind of trial or fun match going on to go play at. It's Awesome. Nuff Said.

Adrienne - in your "swimming dogs" pics - where are you?? That looks way better than my local swim spot..... And that 1,000 acre dog park is AMAZING I go there quite frequently. Love it.

(Adrianne I spelled your name incorrectly earlier in the thread and I am SO MAD because I know how to spell it and I CAN'T EDIT IT ARGH)

Okay, I'm sold. I'M REALLY EXCITED NOW, OKAY.

As far as renting goes, do places usually have breed restrictions? We have the whole ESA thing on our side, but I don't want to go through that ordeal if I don't need to :P

Google tells me Portland is a little over an hour and a half from the beach. Accurate?

Two hours from Rick's mother/brothers/grandmother, three hours from his father and closest friends, so that's awesome.

How hard is it to find employment? Rick can do anything, really. Big guy, can lift heavy stuff, will have a GED by the time we move. Experience working as a dishwasher at an upscale restaurant, and general outdoor maintenance.

I do dog training stuffs, though I'm not opposed to working at a doggy daycare or something similar. Is there a market for force free trainers out there?

Breed Restrictions

Depends on where you go.... Places I looked at were a case by case basis, and were more concerned about number of dogs or size of dog than breed. Looking at houses was easier, landlords are more forgiving once they meet the dogs and realized they're not psycho, versus an apartment complex where they won't budge from their policies.

Yup you can get to the beach in about an hour and a half/two hours depending on what part. It's awesome.

I'm no help in the employment part..... I would think if you work hard and get resumes and apps out there as much as possible (heck start before you even move) it should happen pretty easily, this time of year there are a lot of construction positions available(thinking for Rick...)

There are a variety of dog walking/running businesses and some private training businesses as well... I don't know much about that stuff though.

All I know is - It's Awesome in the PNW and you will NOT regret a decision to move out here!

An hour and a half is accurate

Ack, and I spelled Adrianne's name wrong, too, but it was also too late to edit. I need to stop doing that x.x

There are definitely work opportunities for all types of training here. When it becomes a sure thing let me know and I'll help you scout work.

Brian and I have been thinking of moving in the next few years to either Oregon, California, or Colorado...

This makes me want Oregon so bad. The weather sounds marvelous and those links/pictures!

I will be very jealous if you get to move there, Julee!

And you also must stop in Michigan on the way there, if you drive.
