thinning a dogs coat

Its that time of year again. And I have noticed that peewee is not shedding his coat like he should. Last year we had to have him shaved down despite my attempts at getting all the dead hair out. So this year I started earlier, and its happening again. What can I do to not have to shave him down? I know part of the problem is his age, his diet(raw), and him being fixed. In the fall I was able to brush out his summer coat, but his coat was a lot shorter then.

For my chow the best thing I ever used were rakes, I had three with different teeth spacing, and just started at the widest and worked down to the narrowest.

Ruffiangirl. I have a bunch of those and they just don't seem to be pulling the hair like they used to. I'm just at a loss as to what to do, everything that I normally use just isn't pulling the coat like it used to.

Furminator.

Usually, I HATE the thing for longer coats because it shreds the coat. But if you are looking to shorten and thin, then it'll work perfectly for you for that very reason. Just be careful, because it might do the job you want a little too well and create bald patches.

I didn't even think of using that. I will have to dig it out and see how it works. Fingers crossed it works.

When pippins coat got like that I had to use a comb and get under the shed and comb it out in chunks. It's also how I used to do the Shibas. The furminator did nothing for either

Unfortunatly its not doing that anymore. I used to beable to sit there and pull chunks out, now I have to really pull to get them out, where as they would come out at barely a touch before. I used the furminator on him last night, it worked ok. Not the best but I was able to get much more hair out then I had the last couple of nights. Hopefully an hour or so each night will get ahead of things so he doesn't have to go to the groomers.

Unfortunatly it will probably be harder to do this year because he was shaved last year. This is one of the way coats become compromised when they are shaved. A high velocity dryer will be the only way that you can be sure to remove all of the dead undercoat. I use greyhound combs, chrome coat, and a dryer to slowly remove undercoat on elderly dogs in this condition. Chrome Coat really works wonders to help with this!

Do you have a force dryer? Or what about taking him to a groomer. let them do the grunt work. then it will be easy to keep up with
