I'm not saying people shouldn't be upset over it....I'm just honestly confused...

It's not uncommon for people to set dogs on fire. These dogs are in the news. The articles are online. I'll usually see one mention of this, and more if I look further into it.

This dog is EVERYWHERE. He's all over my newsfeed, all over tumblr and twitter, etc.

Stuff like Jonbennet Ramsey VS. 1000s of African kids makes tons of sense from a media/sociology standpoint. One is a pretty white American girl with a baby doll face who was murdered in everyone's "backyard". 1000s of African kids, or even inner city kids who are killed in America, are miles and miles away from the reality most people know, are not glorified by the media, and are on a scale large enough that people feel like they can't do anything about it.

I just don't see any difference (from a media standpoint) between this dog being dumped, and tons of others being dumped who have articles written on them. Or the difference between this dog who was dumped, and the 3 men sodomized, burned, and beaten in the Bronx for being gay. Or the 17 year old girl who was expelled from school when they asked what her sexual orientation was and she said "gay".

This is a serious topic of conversation. I'm not trying to bash people for being more concerned with this dog than with other dogs or other gay rights situations. I'm trying to figure out what it is about this story, and this article (I've only seen one article) that is so appealing on a mass scale.

My guess is that this story is weirder. It is more outrageous, more shocking. Reasonable people don't see dogs as being straight or gay, and so this was just a "WTF" sort of story.

Maybe people are being ridiculous about it, but still, you can't dictate what they feel or what they post.

*shrugs* I don't necessarily see it as ridiculous....I mean the situation is ridiculous, I don't necessarily think people's reactions to the article are ridiculous. I just don't see what makes this article or situation more notable than many, many others like it.

But I guess working in rescue, or with dogs, you see and hear stories like this all the time, but they aren't typically reported in the news. Nobody writes an article about the guy who gives his dog up because he got new furniture and it doesn't match, or the woman who gives up the dog because she got tired of it.

Are you really confused? Do you really see this as a serious topic of conversation? This is more confusing to me than a story in the news about a moron giving up his dog for a stupid reason.

This reason for giving up a dog is a first (well, at least for me, rofl) so it seems it would get lots of attention (even if some of us view it as ridiculous).

I had to go looking to see what you were talking about. Oddly, nobody in my world is talking about it!

If you are honestly confused, I think the reason is that gay rights and sexuality is such a hot button topic for people. It's like the people I know who will vote 100% based on a politician's stance on gay rights, without even looking at any other aspects of their platform. People set their sites on the things that matter most to them, or affect them the most, and fixate on that.

I've been involved in rescue for quite a while and have heard a lot of stupid excuses for getting rid of (or getting) a dog, and this one still made my eyes pop out a bit.

For a lot of people, this is a new reason. So yah, its going to get attention because somebody heard about it.

That said, NONE of my friends have been posting about it. I don't think its getting quite as far as one may think.
