Hi, I just adopted my 6month old rottie cross from the SPCA and have been feeding her a cup of Purina One morning and night and with a handful or so of kibble/treats throughout the day for good behaviour. Is this appropriate? She always seems hungry still after she's done so I gave her another half cup this evening and she gulped that down to. I'm not sure how much food to feed for her.
As far as activity she's been going on 2 runs and 2-3 walks a day (since I got her yesterday morning) but this will probably decrease a bit in the next bit as the week resumes, but she will still be pretty active. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about amount of food... or if I'm even feeding the right food. |

I would suggest looking for a different brand of food and slowing switching your dog over. The main ingredients in Purina is corn, which is mostly just a filler. I know a lot of people have good suggestions on kind. But when you go to the store look at the ingredients on the bag and try to find one that is not mainly corn. I think a few that people use are Innova? and Candidae? Also Nutro doesnt have corn either, that is what I use...it is the only premium dog food really offered in my area as far as I know.

Ick. Switch food first. If you feed a quality food you'll be feeding less. less poop too!

Oh... I thought Purina was a quality food, the first ingredient is chicken on the bag, then brewer's rice and then poultry byproduct. Not sure if this is good or bad? The bag recomends for her weight 2-3cups per day.
She's 45lbs. |

I am not sure about Purina One. I guess that one has different ingredients than most Purina foods. Everyone I looked at had corn as the main ingredient.
I dont know about the Purina One then. About the amount of food, well it depends on how active they are, etc. |

The problem is that there is just not much meat at all in that food. The order of the ingredients is sorted by weight before the food is processed, and you lose a lot of your chicken once the moisture is out... making that food mostly rice and corn fillers. By-product meals is basically all the poultry parts that aren't suited for human consumption, so definitely not good quality meat. Plus it contains menadoine, which is forbidden for consumption in some Europen countries.
Definitely check Mordy's site (http://www.dogfoodproject.com/) to learn to recognize good products. |
