Has anyone had something similar happen?

So, we got home from our shopping trip and everything seemed to be working until around 10 when I tried washing my hands. No water. Zero of the faucets in our house are working, not even the water dispenser on the fridge, nor will the toilet flush. Needless to say, my mom is a tad worried that maybe our well is empty, although I don't know how long an average sized well of water lasts.

It's been pretty cold out here lately, and we must have a good ten inches or more of snow on the ground.. maybe they froze? I'm just wondering if anyone has had something similar happen because I don't really want to have to go to my dad's every night in order to take a shower, etc until we get it all sorted out.

I'd guess you have a problem with your pump on the well more than anything. The toilet should flush, it just won't refill.

Does your well house have a heater?

We have to heat our well house even though we live in Southern California. It will freeze, pipes will freeze, etc. Then we have no water until it thaws out.

We have two wells. One they dug first and wasn't large enough to supply water for the whole house, so they dug a second. The pump on the second has died before, and the first has run dry afterward, leaving us with no water. It's probably the pump. As was said, the toilets should still flush though.

My first thought was frozen pipes. I grew up in the Catskills in upstate NY, and the well pipes froze every once in awhile. My father had a torpedo shaped heater (we called it a salamader) that he lowered into the well house to thaw the pipes.

Or as RedHotDobe said, it could be the pump. I'd think, tho, if it were the pump, there would have been some indication that it was going.
