Default Golden Retrievers vs. Labrador retrievers

Ok, I have been hearing some different things about goldens and labs and was wondering if lots of this stuff is true. I have heard that goldens, even as puppies, are calmer than labs. I have also heard that shedding is a little more tolerable with the goldens. Are any of those two things true?

I've never owned either, but I think a lot of the rowdiness has to be blamed on just being a puppy. I've met many SSD (Susquehanna Service Dogs) pups (which were all yellow labs) and they responded very well to clicker training, even at 12 weeks of age. As for the shedding question...um, I don't know.

Julie... I hope EliN can post the difference here .... she did once before and it's a riot !! I've never bred labs and the 3 I've known ( Grandlabs ) were rescued . Yes, all 3 were more hyper than any of my Goldens... but was this because of breeding ?? Secondly, I felt the labs did shed more. But maybe it's because of the longer hair the Golden's hair is captured more quickly. Lab hairs " stick "...or fly. I do know that both daughters will seek out a Golden next, rather than another Lab. As much as we loved Rudy and Yogi and now love Hunter.

Selk... they are both very intelligent and want to please. Again, I think it's the breeding and socialization. I think there are more Labs as service dogs as they aren't as easily distracted by kids and other dogs ... Golden's are such softies for attention and loving !

I don't notice any hyperness really in Hannah. In the house she is usually very calm. The shedding is horrible though, that's what Mark's biggest problem is with her. I would love to look at golden's next but I don't think there ever will be a next.

we saw a golden retriever who was a seeing eye dog last week when we were grocery shopping. He did his job so well he walked through the store like they were the only ones there, even after Mark did his annoying dog call when they were standing by us (I had to remind him that he is not suppose to pet or distract the dog in anyway). I guess he didn't know you couldn't pet the dogs, even with the "DO NOT PET" sign on his harness .

We only use goldens, as they are a bit calmer, and more recipient/owner oriented

*Side note*
You arent supposed to interact with the service animal in any way unless consented by the recipient/owner

If your wondering about people or dog ettiquette for service animals just ask or pm, or if ya just have a general question.

In regards to the training of retriever breeds, I have heard...
You tell a Lab.
You ask a Golden.
You negotiate with a Chesapeake.

I know that but for some reason Mark (my husband) didn't know or even notice the sign so I had to give him a talk when we got in the car about the correct way to respond to a service dog (not paying attention to them).
