Default Can you do this?

Can you only feed a dog cat food and still have a somewhat healthy dog? I know some of my neighbors don't buy dog food. They just buy cat food for their cats and that is what the dog eats too and they have a 13 year old dog that is really healthy and doesn't act like an old dog. How big of a difference is dog food and cat food?

There are differences in some nutrient levels, but overall the claim that cat food will make dogs sick is untrue. It's just mostly higher in calories than a comparable dog food.

If you feed correct amounts, chances are a dog will do fine on a cat food, but vice versa it doesn't work - cats have different nutrient needs that most dog foods can't meet.

I had a dog live just about 17 years and he wanted cat food over dog food, so thats what he got & he really loved it. I don't see anything wrong with it really.

This is interesting to know because my older dog doesn't always want dog food but will sneak some cat food. I'm glad to know it's not harming my dog.

Thanks everyone. A lot of my neighbors feed cat food to their dogs and my puppy goes down to the barn and cleans out the cat food dishes too. I feed him puppy food but he doesn't seem to like it as much.

Sarge, just make sure you keep an eye on your dog's body condition, since you can't really control food intake that way.

I have been keeping an eye on him. I am told that I worry to much about him, but he is my baby. What can you do?

Cat food can supplement a dog if needed. There is some cat food out their to provide needed suppments to cats that have a history of UTI's or kidney/liver issues.

If your dog or cat is in good health, it should be fine.
