Ok. So they want us to pay half of the bill, which is fine. It was $600 and I can afford the $300 (in installments - sadly). Our landlady really doesn't want us to move and has suggested that Mikey start wearing a muzzle. I guess we are the best tenants they've had. Go figure. I'm really against the muzzle. Then everyone will think he's an agressive dog! And he's not really.

The RCMP (police) and AC (animal control) are debating over whose jurisdiction this is because we live just outside of town limits. If AC took care of it they would meet with us and make some guidelines that Mikey has to live by. We haven't heard from any of them yet.

Anyway, I'm still quite stressed out and worried and am not having any easy time. My bf's uncle has been living with us and he a completely depressing, negative, lazy man which I don't respond well too. The situation is temporary but it's really getting me down and there really isn't anything immediate to do.

<sigh> sob story

Thanks Bogolove. Mikey's going in to get neutered tomorrow (so is my bunny Niblet). I've had two people tell me that I should wait and see what the RCMP is going to do instead of wasting my money on getting him neutered. I think that's horrible. I won't even consider the idea that they will put him to sleep. I don't seriously think it's going to happen either. But you never know.

I think that getting him neutered is a good step. At least it's a move towards solving the problem.

Okay. Mikey didn't bite a person. That's the thing you have to remember and remind everyone else of. The landlady's dog bit HER. Mikey and her dog had a scrap, that's all. If Mikey had any intention of really hurting the dog it would be dead. Perspective is everything. And the circumstance that the landlady has agreed on only half of the vet bill certainly goes to the argument that this was not all Mikey's fault; that there was another dog acting aggressively. She will surely be happy if you keep Mikey inside a kennel, leashed or under your direct supervision when he's on the property. Maybe, under those circumstances, she declines to speak to the authorities about what happened to her dog in order to keep you as a renter and it all goes away.

Second bit of perspective: don't listen to insensitive idiots.

Maybe having a little off-the-record chat with your friend at AC would help get this settled since you're outside the city limits.

Now, have you thought about setting a finite period of time for the freeloading uncle's stay?

LOL the insensitive idiots are my mom and my boyfriend! LOL

Thanks for the perspectives Renee. When it comes to my family I tend to worry too much. Plus it's been a bad day. Well, an emotional day at least.

I've been thinking about going and talking to the AC officer. He's a nice guy. It's a smallish town so he also gives parking tickets and I've seen him let an old lady off after she parked infront of a fire hydrant. I just want to get it over with. I hate waiting. It gets me worked up.

Yes, the uncle has a finite period of time. He will be gone by the end of February definitely. He just doesn't have a penny to his name right now and no one loves him enough to pay for him to go there I guess. What a horrible thing to say. But really, why would anyone want to take in such a negative guy. To be fair, he is depressed and in therapy but arrgghhh!!!!!!!

Thanks again for you help

I got tired of waiting and called the shelter (of Terrace) who told me to call the RCMP who told me to call the Regional District who told me to call the Thornhill shelter (nobody is responsible for this district apparently). The lady there and I talked for quite awhile and I told her my side and what I was doing and how I felt about the whole thing. And she said that really nothing was going to get done about it because it was the RCMPs responsibility but they don't do anything when a dog bites another dog. So nothing was moving along. She said that she could tell that I was a very responsible pet owner and that if she had jurisdictiion she would tell me to do all of the things that I was already doing and that she also felt that my landlady was responsible for letting her dog run lose too. Point of the story: I feel soooo much better to have talked to them and found out what's going on and to tell my side. She said it rarely happens that people call and take some responsibility and try to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Or that they are willing to pay for part of it.

Only one more hour before I can go an pick Mikey up from the vet. This day has gotten better.

Thanks. You guys are so supportive. It helps. Looks like everything is going to be ok. I may still hear from someone wants they get their jurisdiction thing figured out but I don't think it will be serious.

Thanks again Barb

That's a load off my mind, too! Give Mikey a big snuggle for me and tell him not to scare us like that again!

I will. He's very dopey tonight and more than happy for snuggles. He fell asleep with his head mashed up against a wooden chair. What a goof.
