Default A Loose Dog Sort of Day...

Apparently it was a "loose dog" sort of morning. Mira and I had a loose dog come after us on the bike trail this morning...shot out of the little strip of woods between us and a residential neighborhood and flew at me from behind. Seemed more like a motion reactivity sort of thing than real aggression but still. Some sort of husky-esque dog...I'd put him down as Husky X some sort of generic shepherd or collie, as a guess. Handsome dog. No tags of course and wouldn't let me get close to him so I just pushed him back a bit til he got the picture that chasing us wasn't going to fly then went on. Mira held the stand-stay I put her in during all this -- she really is such a good girl.

Rounded the next bend in the trail and a guy was running along with an offleash dog wearing collar/tags. Brilliant. He stops and holds her collar as I roll up with Mira, she's little girl black lab, seems friendly anyway. I stop and warn him that there's a loose dog up ahead. He says, "Yeah, she just keeps following me!" I stare at him confused...the loose dog had clearly come from the opposite direction...

Turns out his dog was not his dog at all but had appeared and been running alongside him for a couple miles. He didn't have a leash, seeing as how he didn't actually have a dog, so was going to drive her back home if she continued following him all the way back to the trail entry point.

Twenty minutes later on our way back a big white pickup truck pulls up alongside the bikepath and stops. "Hi! Have you see a loose black lab? Smaller, should have a collar on...?"

Why yes, yes I have...

Oh man... How stressful! (You just inspired me to ride my bike, luckily it needs air)

Well, she was lucky to have found someone who was watching out for her, and that she had an owner looking for her. She must have escaped somehow.

Been meaning to tell you, I don't know what it is about Mira, but she's really made me a fan of her breed, and when it comes to sporting breeds I'm usually pretty neutral, I like them, but they aren't a type I'd be interested in living with . . . but I think I could enjoy a Flatcoat

According to the guy in the truck, the Lab was out in the yard and ran off toward the bike path but they were in the middle of something (I got the impression it was a farm) and it took a bit before they could go after her. But yeah between the guy she was following planning to take her home and her home looking for her, I'm guessing she's okay.

I hope the husky mix found his home as well. He was clearly well cared for and was probably a nice enough dog when not in chase drive but he wasn't going to let me touch him and I was on wheels and had nothing to catch him.

And thanks She is one in a million, at least in my eyes. We've had a lot of "interesting" experiences and she's proven herself time and time again to be an intelligent and savvy sidekick, acting as protection, comic relief, unofficial therapy dog, and partner depending on the situation. Not that she is perfect, but she is perfect for me.
