Are you looking for good blogs? Forums?

www.absolutewrite.com is a fantastic writer's community. There's a wide range of folks there with a lot of published authors of all genres, editors, agents, and lot of folks just starting out.

The Bookshelf Muse is an interesting blog. They've got an emotion thesaurus, it's neat to read through.

I'm looking to get back into creative writing, which I haven't done in years, so something for someone who is a little rusty would be good.

What kind of things do you find yourself drawn to writing?

Well, I used to write short stories and recently have the urge to write poetry. It's harder than I thought it would be and the ideas and verses seem to only come to me in spurts. I stopped any kind of creative writing after my sophomore year of college because I was an English major that did mostly analytical writing, and just didn't have the time. Then after college life just got in the way.

I wrote a poem about the passing of my old horse just this evening, it's very rough though and has no name:

Through twenty years she was a teacher, confidant, and friend
It breaks my heart that in this life I won't see her again.

I find joy in that someday, this sadness too shall pass
I'll close my eyes in the dark of death, and opening them, see grass!

A valley stretches before me, a flawless emerald plain
Home to countless joyful equines, free of fear and pain.

But I feel a pang of sadness, and then let out a sigh
I'll never find my mare out here-the numbers are too high....

A gentle breeze blows to my ears an old familiar sound
A gleaming horse flies toward me, across the flowered ground!

Hooves thunder like a summer storm as she streaks across the grass
The sunlight dances on her coat, the shade of coppered brass.

A saddle a mere hinderance, no bridle will she wear
I need only entwine my fingers through her crimson mane of hair.

The grasslands roll and pitch around us, waves on an earthen sea
And she and I bold sailors, my sprightly mare and me

As we travel endless woodland trails and splash through crystal ponds
Love and wonder wash away my mortal cares and bonds

For when the Father calls me home, to His land beyond the sky
Our souls will finally dance as one, my sorrel mare and I.

I've come to think that analytical and writing of that ilk really chokes my own creative writing. It burns me out. I don't even read much when I'm doing that stuff.

Your poem doesn't need more than a bit of polishing! And you got the most important part -- it evokes strong emotion

I am a member of Accentuate. It is a good writing forum. There are some really talented writers there, several are published authors. I haven't been on for quite a while lately. But I was when I was writing more. I'm kind of on a hiatus.

I love your poem. Very nice!
